20th Annual Jade Festival …

… is fast approaching. Get ready for 3 full days of fun and frolic on the South Coast of Big Sur.

It will be held Friday, October 7th from noon to 6 pm; Saturday, the 8th from 10 am to 6 pm; Sunday, the 9th from 10 to 5 pm. It is to be held at the Pacific Valley School, across the street from Sand Dollar Beach. Live music all day, every day. Jade pieces for all pocketbook sizes, jewelry, art, and raffle.

Here’s this year’s postcard, available for sale only at the Jade Festival. Due to costs, number of people, and new technology, we are no longer sending out the postcards, but they will be for sale at the main booth and designed so that you can send them to friends, if you choose.

Health Center Fundraiser at Ventana

The day was perfect, the setting sublime, the people joyful. What a day!

Wine tasting was provided by wineries from throughout the region, and I think every Big Sur restaurant was represented in the incredible appetizers served, and they were unbelievable. At the risk of forgetting anyone, I won’t list them. But it was a delightful treat.

To Arvil, Nadine, and Patte who coordinated an unforgettable event. We (Rock Knocker and I) so enjoyed the event, we are planning on making it an annual tradition!

Met with old friends and new friends and soon-to-be friends in the spirit of the close community we are. It was so nice to meet some people I had come to know first through reputation, and then through this blog – but to come face-to-face and get one of those famous Big Sur hugs, made my day! Thank you, Soaring, you are indeed a gem and a legend to our Coast. I would love to read of your experiences as fire look-out for so many years up on Cone Peak. Maybe a guest column several times a year? Whaddya think? Would y’all love to read her stories?

Photos of the event might be posted tomorrow, if technology cooperation achieved and time allows!

I will not have the photo contest up for at least a week, I am guessing. I was flooded with entries on Friday, and am still downloading (large files are hard for my system) sorting, filing, etc. before I can even begin to pick the top 10 choices. It will be really difficult, as there are some great entries. One major priority will be looking at how the photo will fit into the mandated heading size.

Reminders

First, the Art from here and there, a fundraiser for the Big Sur Health Center is this Sunday at 2:00 pm at Ventana. A reliable source says a Barbara Spring piece has been added to the available art!

Second, the photo contest for the BigSurKate header photo ends at Midnight (or by the time I check my email in the morning.

Third, and last, Los Padres National Forest is increasing staffing on all districts, including Monterey, bringing in teams and equipment from other forests in anticipation of possible dry lightning. A source in Paso already reported the build up of thunderheads moving in a NW direction towed us earlier this afternoon. Pay attention, and report any smoke sightings immediately!

Have a great and safe weekend.

Featured Artist

Occasionally, I feature a local artist. Any local Big Sur artist will be featured if the artist submits a jpg photo of the artwork. Today, I feature Barbara Sparhawk. This is Big Sur Sunset, Dunes:

Big Sur Sunset, Dunes by Barbara Sparhawk

You can see more of her work here: Hawk’s Perch or at her gallery of the same name at the Village Shops next to the River Inn.

Christmas Tree

Leslie White, that wonderful painter and teacher friend of mine, shared this with me when I asked her. I love the simplicity of the Christmas scene. My plan was to make my Christmas Cards from this image this year. Well, I’m running out of time, so I will share it with my readers, instead.

You can visit Leslie at: Lesliepaints but be warned, you will get hooked on her paintings and teachings.

Thank you, Leslie, for so much this past year!

Black Friday

I am guessing I no longer have a handle on consumerism. I think I never had a handle on consumerism. I don’t get it. Really. It is an absolutely foreign cultural experience.

Black Friday – the biggest shopping day of the year.

I watched a news report of people who were camping out – complete with tents, folding tables, and their Thanksgiving Dinner, waiting for a store to open at 1 am.

I also saw a Target commercial that announced its opening at 4 am on “Black Friday.” People shop in the early morning hours of the night?

There is a serious disconnect going on in my brain, right now. Shopping in the dead of night suggests psychosis to me.

Shopping isn’t something I do, except when absolutely necessary. I avoid malls, chain stores, and crowds. If I want to shop and enjoy it, I go to small local shops. I cried when Thunderbird closed and I was consigned to Borders. If I can get it on the internet, I do. But this weekend, there is a shopping experience that is enjoyable, even for a non-shopper like me.

Big Sur has its annual Arts & Craft Fair at the Grange this weekend, to benefit our local non-profits. If you aren’t standing in line already, to make the 1 am or 4 am opening tomorrow morning, consider coming down here to the Grange (just south of Ripplewood – watch for the banner over the highway) at a decent hour to do your shopping. No lines. No camping required. And no psychosis.

Celia’s parents moved here in the 1940’s seeking solitude and land and fell in love with this magnificent place. Artists themselves, they created a backdrop where Celia and her siblings could participate in a world of creativity. Life & Blogging

I try to post almost every day about what is going on here in the Wilds of Big Sur, whether it be weather, road, fire conditions- or sometimes just photographs, and I usually succeed. Sometimes I cannot. Life is just too busy. My time is not my own. I am juggling too many objects, some of them sharp. Right now is one of those times. I hope to be able to post something of interest in the next few days, as I did promise you Part 3 of my Keeping Big Sur safe from wildfires series. That would be Saturday, if I am lucky. In the mean time, enjoy this beautiful weather we are having. I am!

Oh, and don’t forget the “Art from Here to There” on Sunday at 3 pm at the Ventana Terrace to benefit the Big Sur Health Clinic. Will see you there!

Featured Artist

And now, to change the dialogue a bit, I would like to offer up a “featured artist.” I would like to make this a regular feature, but it would depend on others sending me jpg versions of their work, so no promises. The work could be in any form – paintings, photographs, sculpture, jewelry, whatever form your art takes, but sent to me in jpg format.

Today’s feature artist sent me three jpgs, but I can only find two of them. This artist has been the art teacher, as well as a teacher of other subjects, for over 15 years at the school down the hill from me. He has led the school in an “Ambassador of the Arts” program, a recycling program, has won many awards and grants for the students and the school, and is a commercial fisherman on the side.

Dave donates his art to every non-profit fundraiser around, and donates his time unselfishly to leading student created murals, including one on the K-rail at the Health Center.

Dave Allen has also been a regular contributor to this blog since its inception, and has provided up close and personal accounts of harrowing trips down the coast in difficult winter conditions. Thank you, Dave for all that you do for your students, your school, and the community of Big Sur! And thanks for sharing your work with bigsurkate readers!
