This photo taken by Sula Nichols was sent to me a few days ago. It is beautiful, don’t you think? I particularly like the thin fog line.

A photographic hodgepodge
There are a number of photos I have been meaning to upload here, but just never seem to get around to it.
This first one was taken on the early morning run to the vet for Gideon’s surgery. One great thing about getting on the road early. I have seen this herd many times, but never this close to Highway One. Unfortunately, somehow, I forgot my camera and had to use my iPhone. Two of the males are getting ready to fight.

“The tule elk (Cervus canadensis ssp. nannodes) is a subspecies of elk found only in California, ranging from the grasslands and marshlands of the Central Valley to the grassy hills on the coast.[1] The subspecies name derives from the tule that it feeds off of, which grows in the marshlands. It is the smallest subspecies of all American elks, with the average weight of adult males only 450 – 550 pounds. The females average 375 – 425 pounds. The calves are similar to deer fawns, with brown coat and white spots. When the Europeans first arrived, an estimate of 500,000 tule elk roamed these regions. But by 1895, habitat loss and hunting had reduced the elk population to only 28.[2] Conservation measures were taken to protect the species in the 1970s.[3] Today the wild population exceeds 4,000.[2] Tule elk can reliably be found in Carrizo Plain National Monument, Point Reyes National Seashore, and portions of the Owens Valley from Lone Pine to Bishop.” (wikipedia)
I will add a few more later today and perhaps tomorrow, but I have been procrastinating on work long enough!

This is a light fixture in a restaurant – The Chart House, I believe. I did title this post a hodgepodge, remember?

This was a doorway in San Juan Bautista. It lent itself quite nicely to a soft black & white treatment.

This was also taken with the iPhone, thus the “halo effect” from the HDR. I took this back in May.
Okay, that’s it for today. Look for more tomorrow!
Pitkin’s Curve Bridge Photo
This was submitted by a reader of ours. It is a classic! He took it on the way home from the Jade Festival:

Photo Contest winners & other miscellany
I apologize for taking so long to get this up, and for missing a couple announcements. bigsurkate could easily be a full-time job, but the problem is, I already have a full-time job – and 4 dogs (one of whom has been to the vet three times in two weeks) and a home in the wilderness, which is always challenging. Thanks for your patience.
So, here are the winners:
First place goes to Daniel Van Gerpen, of Salinas, CA for his Garrapata Pano shot. He actually submitted this one last contest and it was inadvertently lost, misfiled, or otherwise left out. You can find his work at danvans.com Dan, send me your address (at kwnovoa@mac.com) so I can send you the $50 Nepenthe Gift Certificate.

In second place, Big Sur Mountain Tops by Daniela de Sola of Big Sur.

And in third place a mystical image by Brett Paul.

I also would like to apologize to Lee-Ann and the organizers of the Occupy Wall Street protest at 13 stones for not being able to get the word out about yesterday’s gathering. I hear it was great, as was the one in Monterey. The Occupy demonstrations have spread through out the world, now. I want a bumper sticker that says – “I’m part of an endangered species – the middle class!” Let’s keep the conversation going!
Photo Contest – Vote NOW!
Today, despite the weather (or maybe because of it?) the internet goddess smiled mightily on me, and I was able to upload all ten photographs easily. She is also letting me update my links, changing over from fire watch to storm watch. I should complete the transition shortly.

Photo Contest
I usually try to get a new header photo up around the solstice or equinox, but I am going to be a little late, this quarter, it looks like.
Okay, these are the rules:
-landscape format only
-photo must have been taken in Big Sur
-no more than 5 submissions per reader, each submitted separately in its own email to me at kwnovoa@mac.com
-MUST be submitted as a jpg attachment to an email. I can’t seem to organize them otherwise.
-Deadline for submissions: Friday, September 23rd at midnight.
-please include your name and town and title of photo, if you have one (if not, identify the place)
That weekend, I will choose the 10 best photos and by Monday the 26th, the photos will be up for reader voting, if the internet goddess allows. This contest is open to all, wherever you live, but the prize for the winner will be redeemable only here in Big Sur, so you’ll have to come back for another visit to claim it. A shame, isn’t it?
Have fun, and send me a few of your best!! Last winner, Bette Nelson, won a $50 gift certificate from River Inn and Alan Perlmutter, and had her photo featured for sale by Barbara Sparhawk of Hawk’s Perch in the Village Shopping Center, next to River Inn and the Pub. Dan Danbom won lunch for two from Lucia Lodge. The Fall 2011 contest prize is a $50 gift certificate from Nepenthe, courtesy of Kirk Gafill. Thank you Kirk and Nepenthe Corporation!
Lunch
I rarely think to photograph food before I dig in, but this salad at Marie Calendar’s was so colorful and pretty, I just HAD to photograph it – iPhone to the rescue, as I generally don’t take my Nikon into a restaurant. Hm, maybe I should start?

Before you eat this, don’t you just want to “frame” it? I know this is not Big Sur related, but I couldn’t help myself!
Other Photo Entries
And here, as promised, are a few of the other wonderful entries that did not make the 10 finalists, some only because they would not survive the ultimate crop required. I’ll be posting a few on and off, as time allows.

I will add a couple more during the day today.

Photo contest winners
First place, and winner of a $50 gift certificate to River Inn is Bette Nelson, of Monterey with her photograph of the photographers at Pfeiffer Beach. I loved this one for its touch of whimsy. It so speaks to one of the reasons people come here. THANKS TO ALAN PERLMUTTER OF THE RIVER INN FOR THE DONATION OF THE GIFT CERTIFICATE!! And Bette, contact me about the gift certificate, and about Barbara Sparkhawk’s, of Hawk’s Perch Gallery next to the River Inn to carry prints of this photograph for sale. Congratulations, Bette!!
This is what the full photograph looks like:

And in second place is the heart of a stone by Joya Roy, who took this on a recent camping trip here. Again, the full photo:

And in third place is the hummingbird bridge by Martha Diehl.

Congratulations to the winner! Thank you one and all for submitting your photographs and for voting on the winners. Great job. Another one in a couple months, before fire season gets in full swing, and I’ll announce it in the “Notices” post at the top of the blog. I’m going to keep it generic Big Sur, I think. That seems to work better than a seasons-theme does.
Again, thank you to Alan Perlmutter of the River Inn for the donation of the $50 gift certificate, and to Barbara Sparhawk of Hawk’s Perch Gallery for offering to show and sell the photograph in her galley.
Did someone mention ribbon cutting?
Photo sent by Charlie Hench, resident engineer, Cal-Trans

I don’t know for sure when this was taken, as the mega-data says 1/1/1980, but I suspect yesterday.
