Big Sur River Magic

Gabriel Hyppolite sent me these photos taken yesterday of his unique perspective on the Big Sur River, and I think you will agree with me that these photos show the magic that is here. Elegant photographs, thank you, Gabriel!

Ruby’s

There is a place here in Redondo Beach that is my mother’s favorite. It has become ours, as well. The food tastes as good as this place looks.

In the midst of all the sadness, we have made this our place for lunch. It doesn’t hurt that it is so photogenic.

Now, just to raise my spirits, would you mind letting me know which of these is your favorite? I am having a hard time making up my mind. If you want, you can let me know why, but otherwise, a vote will be anonymous. Thank you.

MLK’s Mission

47WhiteBuffalo put out a challenge to bloggers – “Would you blog for peace?” Today, given the message of Dr. King, it seems appropriate to answer her challenge.

January Weather

All I can say is WOW! Three-day weekend, weather mana from heaven. Blessed are we who are here in Big Sur this weekend. This is a great weekend to come out and play on the Big Sur coast, and frequent your favorite places!

The photodocumentary I posted on the “shitty hang gliders” has generated a lot of attention within the hang gliding community, and I have been assured by too many to count, that this conduct will not be tolerated in their community. The vast majority of the hang gliders commenting here, or on their own bulletin boards are very supportive of our efforts to combat this type of behavior. There are always those few immature individuals who don’t get what the big deal is, or who think I “framed” these hang gliders, or that I am ___ (fill in your favorite pejorative description), but they are clearly in the minority. We have these types in ALL groups of human beings, so that is nothing new.

And on another note – Just another spectacular sunset from last night!

1-1-11 Storm

9:30 pm – I had to go out in this deluge for something else, and since I was getting wet, I decided to check the rain gauge. I have received just under an inch, so far. Tomorrow is projected to be even stronger. It is a bloody mess up here, so I can just imagine what the highway is like!

1:00 pm – still quite stormy, 41 degrees, but friends on the North Coast got treated to this:

Thank you, Lisa!

10:30 – Woke up to rain and sleet, which continues, along with the strong winds. Be safe, and stay warm, everyone!

2010 in Review through Photos

Year in Review through photos by readers and bigsurkate. I did not realize how many people have contributed photos to my blog this year! I think there are 15 photographers represented here, and many more contributed. Thank you all. Picking only 50 photos that were representative of the year here at bigsurkate and of the many photographers who contributed, was impossible, so it is somewhat random. Thanks for making this a wonderful year.

Lunar Eclipse Progression Photos

Unbelievable series of photos by Dan Danbom. Dan, I can’t thank you enough for sharing this with me and my readers! This is an amazing series! What a gift to those of us who couldn’t see it or stay up long enough!

Dan lives in Monterey, CA, for those of you not familiar with his work. He has also taken incredible shots of condors, as well as the Big Sur Coast. Check out his website: Danigraph

This is what Dan had to say about his shots: “We were dodging haze, or mist, and super sharp clear, so I tried in the clear spots. It is tricky, and I came up with this, so I put together three images, that sort of show the progression, and then the clouds came in at the last, and the covered moon did not show much, so I quit, as it is marginal shooting the reddish moon that is really dark, at night, but if you want to post my efforts, that is fine. It is tricky getting the image to look right as it is small in the frame. With the limits of your blog image space, size wise, I cropped in so it would show small size on the blog, I will also attach the image that was not cropped so you can see what my telephoto did, ok, but no super long, like my short pockets afford. Dan”

If this is what you can do in difficult conditions and with a limited telephoto, wow! I can’t imagine it getting any better than this!
