HIGHWAY 1 RETAINING WALL PROJECT TO START JULY 26

WITH 24/7 SIGNALIZED TRAFFIC CONTROL 

MONTEREY COUNTY – A construction project on Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast to build a retaining wall and enhance drainage infrastructure will begin Tuesday July 26.

The project location is on Highway 1 at PM 44.5 at a location known as Coastlands. It is approximately one mile north of the Henry Miller Library and .8 miles south of the Big Sur Post Office.

Winter storms in the first quarter of 2019 caused a slip out below the southbound lanes of travel after which an emergency project secured the hillside. These repairs below the roadway, along with K-Rail placed on the southbound shoulder, have permitted the road to remain open until a permanent repair could be made. 

The current project involves construction of a soldier pile retaining wall, installation of guardrail, and additional enhancements to drainage infrastructure and landscaping, which will permanently restore the site.

Starting on July 26, travelers will encounter 24/7 one-way traffic control as temporary signals will be activated at each end of the project parameters. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Travelers will encounter reduced speed limits in the area in addition to the 24/7 signalized one-way traffic control beginning Tuesday July 26.

Message and directional signs will alert motorists in advance of the construction area.

Travelers are reminded to be work zone alert and give themselves extra time for their commute along this beauteous corridor.

The contractor for this $1.5 million project is FEC Future Contractors and Engineers Inc. of Irvine, CA. This project is scheduled to conclude in February 2023.

Weather watching, 7/18/22

Just posted to twitter by NWS: ”Currently tracking some showers in SLO county that are approaching Monterey county. These cells have produced some lightning near Shandon. Expect the potential for thunderstorms for southern Monterey and southern San Benito counties through the evening. #CAwx”

I suspect, based on other predictions I have read that the potential for thunderstorms with be on the SE portion of MoCo, not the coast.

Full Closure of Highway 1 near Castroville

FULL OVERNIGHT CLOSURE OF HIGHWAY 1 NEAR CASTOVILLE ON SUNDAY, JULY 17

There will be full closure of northbound and southbound Highway 1 near Castroville on Sunday, July 17 at 8:30 pm to 5:30 am on Monday, July 18 for repair and pavement work.

The highway will be closed between the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 156 & at the junction of Highway 1 with Highway 183, just west of Castroville. A detour will be in effect and travelers can expect a delay up to 10 minutes.

Heat Wave predictions

Per Daniel Swain, Weather West: ”In California, the first wave of heat will affect the interior this weekend before relenting somewhat by mid-week. But the secondary heat peak beginning around 10 days from now and continuing for at least 7+ days may be much more consequential and prolonged.

“This heatwave will be remarkable more for its great spatial extent and duration as opposed to its maximum intensity (though again, that could perhaps change, as some ensemble members are suggesting the potential for even hotter conditions).

In other words, this weekend might just be an indication of what is in store for us in about 10 days.

Indictment

Failed warnings

Describes the colonists’ attempts to inform and warn the British people of the king’s injustice, and the British people’s failure to act. Even so, it affirms the colonists’ ties to the British as “brethren.”[63]
“Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity.”
Denunciation

This section essentially finishes the case for independence. The conditions that justified revolution have been shown.[63]
“We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.”
Conclusion

The signers assert that there exist conditions under which people must change their government, that the British have produced such conditions and, by necessity, the colonies must throw off political ties with the British Crown and become independent states. The conclusion contains, at its core, the Lee Resolution that had been passed on July 2.
“We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”
