Fires in Adjacent Counties

there is a wildfire in Santa Cruz County that broke out about 15 mins ago at SR 9 and Keystone Way. The road is closed at both ends. The CHP site did not say which road, but I think Keystone Way is a good bet.

In SLO Co, a vehicle fire broke out about 10 minutes ago at Main St. And the 101 freeway. All occupants are out of the vehicle. Let’s hope it doesn’t go into vegetation.

Ah, yes, Friday night on the Central Coast.

Accident closes Highway One temporarily

Around 4:00 pm this afternoon, a local truck which landed upside down on Highway One, just north of Lucia, closed both lanes of traffic for a period of time. The truck was up at Morning Glory Ranch and rolled or slid off the road. Unconfirmed reports were that one person was trapped inside. The photo seems to indicate that may not be correct. in any event, confirmed reports indicate no one was hurt, thank goodness.

Jade Festival count down, accident, fire, and other updates

First, the count down for the Jade Festival is here – 4 days. Kirk Creek campground was full this am, as well as this pm. There are still spaces available at Plaskett Creek.

There was a motorcycle accident at the Little Sur that closed down the highway for about 3/4 of an hour.

There was a wildfire down near Hearst Castle that was contained within 1/2 hour.

Finally, there is another community meeting about the Viaduct on Wed at the Big Sur Lodge at 10 am. Not much in terms of new info.

“Hi Everyone,

I’ve scheduled a public informational meeting for this Wednesday, October
3, at 10:00 AM at the Big Sur Lodge to discuss the construction of the
Rocky Creek Viaduct. The meeting format will be similar to the September
14 meeting in that we will give a brief summary of the project features and
then take questions.

There will not be a lot of new information but there will some. This
meeting is really intended for those who were not able to participate in
the last one.

Hope to see you all there!

Sincerely,

Ken Dostalek

Bicycle accident at Mud Creek

9/14 5 pm update – see the comments below for an update on the bicyclist’s condition. Thank you, April, and please keep us posted!

2:30 pm update – the man was airlifted to the trauma center, where he is presumably being treated. The 37-year-old man was from Southern California. He was wearing a helmet, and one witness said it probably saved his life.

Noon – about an hour or more ago, there was a serious bicycle accident near mud creek, just north of Sea View ranch. Witnesses to the crash said the bicyclist, a 37-year old volunteer firefighter (not one of ours) seized up, just before the crash. He suffered serious head injuries. No vehicle was involved. Rescuers were hoping to have him air-lifted to the trauma center in San Jose. I did see a helicopter heading north, flying low over me that I suspect was transporting the victim. People who stopped to help included an RN, a pediatrician, and a CT worker who was able to use the satellite phone to contact 911, as there is no cell phone service in much of the south coast highway segment. Also stopping to help was our own local Elaine Peltier, who has had some training and always carries a space blanket and surgical gloves in her vehicle.

Vehicle over the edge, north of Bixby Bridge

As of 5:30 this evening, CHP is reporting a vehicle over the edge, 70 feet down, just north of Bixby Bridge. One reporting party seems to indicate the parties were out of the vehicle, and seemed okay. NOTE the comments below re another incident at Sycamore Canyon re a roll-over, so very unclear at the moment.
