Rocky Creek Update #58

* UPDATE #58 **

HIGHWAY 1/ROCKY CREEK VIADUCT PROJECT IS ALMOST COMPLETED

NOTE: A crane has been set up on the southbound lane of Hwy. 1 at Rocky Creek to remove the debris from the hillside below the viaduct. All work is scheduled to be completed by Thursday, Nov. 21, weather permitting. In case of rain, work is TENTATIVELY scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 26 between 7 am and 5 pm with up to 10-minute holds as needed. One way-reversing control with flaggers will be in effect. An update will be provided this Friday, Nov. 22 if work gets cancelled for next week.

Rain

Glorious rain! Hope it keeps up all day and night! At 9:40am, I have measured .32″. The current hourly rate is .18″ I and the dogs are all dry and cozy in bed. How is the rain where you are?

BTW, there is a chance of thunderstorms with this system, starting this afternoon.

Weather Report

NOAA is predicting 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches. Woohoo!

From a SLO Co Meterologist I follow:

Partly to mostly cloudy skies will continue through tonight. Today’s maximum temperatures will reach the low to mid 60s.

A cold front will pass through Northern California tonight. This cold front pass over San Luis Obispo County on Wednesday
with rain showers. Rain showers will start about 4 a.m. and will continue into Thursday morning. The rain is subtropical
in nature which will result in mild overnight temperatures. Snow levels are forecast to range between 6,000 and 7,000′.

Total rainfall amounts are forecast to range between 0.25 and 0.45 inches, with up to 0.75 inches in the San Simeon
and Cambria areas and along the Santa Lucia mountains.

3/4 of an inch sure sounds good to me! I am so sick of the dust that permeates my pores.

And from NOAA:

FAVORABLE OROGRAPHIC LIFT PLUS MORE FAVORABLE DYNAMICS. EXPECT MORE THAN AN INCH FOR THE NORTH BAY, SANTA CRUZ, AND SANTA LUCIA MOUNTAINS, 1/3″ TO 2/3″ FOR NORTH BAY TOWNS, BETWEEN 1/4″ AND 1/2″ FOR MUCH OF SF BAY, AND LESS THAN 1/4 ” FOR SANTA CLARA/SALINAS VALLEY.

An inch sounds even better!

Sonic Booms

Sonic booms from planes playing war games 70 miles off the coast were heard from Big Sur to Santa Barbara. They rattled my windows and my dogs. Katherine Turner & Burt Ewling of The Cambrian report that Andrews Air Force Base confirmed practice strike runs.

SB 4 – Fracking Regulations

The California Department of Conservation (DOC) has sent out public notice of proposed regulations for the use of well stimulation in oil and gas production. The public notice begins the formal rulemaking process and marks the beginning of a 60-day public comment period. The regulations, which are to go into effect on January 1, 2015, are designed to protect health, safety and the environment, and supplement existing strong well construction standards. They address a comprehensive list of issues, including testing, monitoring, public notice, and permitting. The Department also will have emergency regulations in place by January 1, 2014 to ensure the major requirements on SB 4 are addressed in the interim.

To read the proposed regulations and other material, to see a schedule of upcoming public meetings, or to learn how to make a comment on the proposed regulations that will go into the official rulemaking record, please visit http://www.conservation.ca.gov/Index/Pages/Index.aspx http://www.conservation.ca.gov/Index/Pages/Index.aspxor http://www.conservation.ca.gov/dog/Pages/Index.aspx. http://www.conservation.ca.gov/dog/Pages/Index.aspx

There was a copy of this proposed legislation attached, but it is 13 pages. You should be able to find it at the links provided above.

I love small towns

Today, I did the unthinkable. I’ve only done it once before, in Big Sur, and Debbie rescued me. It taught me to carry my checkbook in my purple briefcase, where I put my iPad and my iPhone. I never forget that, but have now TWICE forgotten my purse.

It wasn’t until I got to Cambria, a distance of 1 and 1/2 hours, and plenty of gas, that I realized it. I went to Robobank. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the sign on the front door – “Take off hat and sunglasses before entering bank.” So, I took off my hat. Of course, they refused to cash my check.

Then I thought of the Shell Station, where they know me from YEARS of going there. It also helps that they keep their employees around for a long time! God bless them, they cashed a check for $35.00. Breakfast is now covered. They will also accept a check to cover the cost of my gas. Woohoo! I can get home. I’m relatively certain that Cookie Crock will accept my check, even without proper ID, as I have been shopping there for absolutely forever.

Okay, now, I will put an emergency stash of cash in my Jeep.

Foto Friday

I’ve been going through my digital photos, trying to get at least my favorites organized and on my iPad – no easy feat. So, throughout the rest of the fall and winter, I’ll be offering up a 1 or 2 each Friday, baring fires, floods, road closures and other Big Sur emergencies.

First, there is a theme going on with these, so I give you more than a couple.

When we get tired of this, I’ll try Travel Tuesdays or something. 😉
