MC_OES: NWS has issued a Flood Warning from 12/31/2022 5-11 PM for the Big Sur River. https://bit.ly/3jI1CRE nixle.us/E6P9M
The National Weather Services has issued a Flood Warning for the Big Sur River for 12/31/2022 from 5:18 PM to 11:15 PM. The Big Sur River near Big Sur is approaching moderate flood stage at around 10 feet. The river is forecast to crest shortly and slowly subside to below flood stage overnight. Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable. Expect many areas of slow moving or standing water. If you feel your life is in danger, get to high ground or leave the area. If you cannot do so safely, call 9-1-1. More information: https://inws.ncep.noaa.gov/a/a.php?i=78042400

UPDATE #1

HIGHWAY 1 ON THE BIG SUR COAST REMAINS CLOSED

GATES AT PAUL’S SLIDE TO CLOSE TODAY AT 4:30 PM

MONTEREY / SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES – Due to rockslides at multiple locations, a full closure of Highway 1 is in effect from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to 2.5 miles south of Big Sur in Monterey County. There is no estimated time for reopening.

UPDATE: Due to continued slide activity behind the catchment area at Paul’s Slide at Post Mile 22, the gates at the north and south side of Paul’s slide will be closed today at 4:30 pm.

The action to close the gates at Paul’s Slide is being taken out of an abundance of caution.

As announced earlier, contracted crews are expected to arrive Sunday Jan. 1, at Paul’s Slide to begin to clear debris from behind the catchment area where rocks and dirt have reached the top of the concrete barriers at four locations.

Caltrans maintenance crews who have been performing daytime storm patrol within the closure parameters will cease these patrols after dark and resume them at first light.

Updates on this closure will be provided as new information becomes available.

Highway One Closure, 12/31/22

These are the South Coast rain totals as of 1 pm this afternoon. Pay attention to Mining Ridge and Anderson Peak. Mining Ridge is behind Big Creek Reserve and Anderson Peak is just north of Esalen and above JPBurns

And just for grins, we have this to deal with.

7 am: This was South of Esalen. Also Ryne noted many disabled cars on the side of the road.

Thursday December 29, 2022, 12:33 PMMonterey County Office of Emergency ServicesAdvisory: Flood Watch for Monterey County | Vigilancia de Inundación para el Condado de MontereyDear Nixle User,The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Monterey County 12/30/2022 10:00 PM to 12/31/2022 10:00 PM. A series of systems will bring more rain to Northern and Central California starting late tonight and continue through New Year’s Eve day. While the rain will be light to moderate at times through Friday, this rain will continue to saturate the soils, and prime the pump for potential flooding. A strong Pacific storm will then move across the region Friday night through Saturday evening, with periods of moderate to heavy rain expected. Increased runoff will result in rapid rises and flooding of area rivers, streams, and creeks. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Fire Adapted Big Sur Newsletter #03
December 27, 2022In this issue: Marshall FireFire Insurance – Part IIEvacuation
Between Christmas and New Year’s Eve last year, a wildfire burned through Boulder County, CO.  This Marshall Fire Facilitated Learning Analysis StoryMap describes the weather, fuels, fire behavior, evacuation, animal rescue, personal stories, and other topics from the event. The interactive presentation is easy to navigate and is full of lessons. Fire spread in the Home Ignition Zone is of particular interest.
Fire Insurance – Part II.  More than 235,000 California homeowner insurance policies were non-renewed in 2019.  Kettle is a San Francisco-based startup that runs fire behavior prediction models for reinsurers.  Reinsurers provide insurance for insurance companies.  This CNBC article describes how computer models are helping reinsurers – a vital link in the insurance ecosystem – to insure insurers so insurers can continue to provide homeowner policies.
This holiday is a great time to consider safety and evacuation routes during times of emergency. Wildfires, floods, and landslides can close driveways, access roads, and Hwy 1.  The Big Sur StoryMap Infrastructure Map provides an interactive view of Big Sur neighborhoods, including roads, dwellings, fire stations, schools, and helicopter landing zones.  info@fireadaptedbigsur.comhttps://i0.wp.com/zohopublic.com/zohocampaigns/1005791000000477280_zc_v42_1668136409832_blendedfabscabstextwhite15.png?w=142Do you wish to change how you receive these emails? You may update your preferences or unsubscribe from this list.

Brace yourselves…this is what is coming

These are three of the models predictions for the next 10 days or so, ECMWF (European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) and GFS (Global Forecast System run by NWS (National Weather Service) and GEM (Global Environmental Multiscale Model). I did not look up CMA or UM. I’ll leave that to you.) The ECMWF is the more robust of the tthree, but under any of these models, we are going to get slammed.

From NWS this morning:

Models have trended to slightly lower QPF totals, and yet when all is said and done by midnight
on Wednesday morning, the highest elevations of the coastal ranges are projected to get 3 to 4 inches with locally up to 5 inches.
