FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

                                                                                                   UPDATE #3

HIGHWAY 1 NEAR BIG SUR TO RE-OPEN THIS AFTERNOON

MONTEREY COUNTY – A roughly 2-mile stretch of Highway 1 near the Big Creek Vista Point (PM 27.3) at the south end to near Dolan Point (PM 29.2) at the north end in Monterey County is expected to re-open at 5:15 this afternoon(Wednesday, Dec. 7)

Travelers will encounter one-way reversing traffic control from 7 am until 5 pm in this same location over the next several days to allow Caltrans to perform additional roadwork and repairs.  Delays are not expected to exceed 10 minutes.

These closure limits were in effect since Monday morning to allow for crews to cleanup storm debris and repair damaged rock netting at Cow Cliffs (PM 28).

A broader road closure initially went into effect Saturday, Dec. 3 following several rockslides on the roadway during a rain event. The road was closed from 2.5 miles south of Big Sur at Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn (PM 42.1) to Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County.

Message and directional signs remain in place to alert travelers of ongoing roadwork.

For traffic updates on other state highways in Monterey County, travelers may contact Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-549-3318, or can visit the District 5 website at: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-5

Our crews deserve to get home safely too.  Drive slowly and carefully in work zones.
