A different Halloween greeting

Celebration in honor of Dante Ponce
The River Inn will be hosting a Life Celebration in honor of our dear friend Dante Ponce who we lost in May on Wednesday, October 24th at 5:00 p.m. We are all invited and to share our favorite Dante moments.
Ride 2 Recovery Bicycle Event
On Tuesday, October 23rd, 170+ bicyclists will be riding down Hwy 1 from Carmel to San Simeon. The group is called Ride 2 Recovery and you can google their site to read more about the organization.
Big Sur Multi Agency Advisory Council Meeting
This is a reminder of the BSMAAC meeting tomorrow, Friday, October 19, 2012 – 10:00 a.m. at the Pfeiffer Big Sur Lodge Conference Center. Ken Dostalek of Caltrans will will be giving a Rocky Creek Viaduct project update. This will also give you a chance to see the major changes being done on the park entrance.

Jade Festival, 2012 & Rocky Creek Viaduct closure update
This morning, all campgrounds down here on the South Coast were full in anticipation of the Jade Festival. The heat wave has broken, so expect foggy and chilly mornings, burning off in the afternoon for beautiful sunshiny afternoons. The festival starts tomorrow at noon and continues Saturday and Sunday from 10-6 pm. Our wonderful Jewell of the South Coast is the featured star, with a supporting cast of great food, live music and wonderful friendly people. This is a family gathering, on a school, so no drugs or alcohol are permitted on site. Fur kids must be on a leash.

HIGHWAY 1/ROCKY CREEK VIADUCT PROJECT IS UNDERWAY—
OVERNIGHT CLOSURES TO BEGIN OCTOBER 15
MONTEREY COUNTY – After further consultation with the contractor, the hours
for full closures of Hwy. 1 at Rocky Creek (PM 59.5) will be 9 pm to 7 am
beginning Monday, October 15 through the end of February, Caltrans
officials have announced.
Roadwork will occur seven days a week, 24/7 with one-way signalized traffic
control. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time. However, full
overnight closures will take place five nights a week Sundays through
Thursdays. No full closures will occur on Friday/Saturday nights.
The project to construct a permanent viaduct about 15 miles south of Carmel
near the Rocky Creek Bridge along Highway 1 began on Sept. 4. Completion is
scheduled by Labor Day 2013, weather permitting.
Daily roadwork schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions
and other factors.
If my calculations are correct, that is four and one-half months of overnight closures, five days a week.
Cambria’s Annual Scarecrow Festival
The businesses add new scarecrows every day, until the judging takes place, so come on down and take a look for yourself. Great photo ops! I found out from a long-time resident who informed me that the high school art studens make the scarecrows and sell them for $20 to the businesses that don’t make their own. This will all culminate at the Harvest Festivwl at the Biachinni house, aka, the Cambrian Historical Society, the second weekend in October, at the corner of Burton and Center.
On the way out of town, I saw so many others I had missed! Several construction workers, the invisible man, the male and female “mooners”, the gal with the flying dog, and at least a dozen more. There are between 200-250 total “scarecrows” that have taken over Cambria. Quite a sight to see. I never even went down Moonstone Drive where there are many more! Next time, I guess.
No one died party
For the last year or so, there hasn’t been a South Coast for-no-reason party. There always seem to be get togethers to celebrate the life of one of our members who has gone on to the next adventure, and there have been a lot lately. Now, Guy decided we needed a “no one died” party. So, that is what we are doing … This Saturday – BYOB, a dish to share, DRUMS (please?) and join us for the afternoon.
