State Route 1 CONTINUES closed from Ragged Point (SLO PM 72.87) to Anderson Canyon Bridge (MON PM 35.4) due to rock/mudslides in multiple locations. The newest slide is located at PM 35, requiring the closure to move from Lucia (PM 23) to Anderson Canyon Bridge (PM 35.4).

Another update will be provided TOMORROW morning, Monday, Jan. 23 or sooner if conditions change.

The pictures are from this morning of Mud Creek (PM 8.8) and Anderson Cyn Slide (PM 35.4) respectively –where’s there’s barely space for Emergency Vehicles to be allowed thru by CHP.

New Slide Last Night between JPBurns and Burns Creek (MM 35) moves closure from Lucia (for Paul’s Slide) To Fuller’s for this one. Mud Creek still shut also. In other words, you can’t get there from here, or from pretty much anywhere for now. Cambria to Ragged Point still open and Carmel to Coast Gallery open for the time being.

12/26/12 Road and Weather Conditions Updates

11 am – from our local CHP (in comments below):

“Hi Kate, This slide is at Partington Ridge Road. They don’t have an estimated time to open the road, they’ll know more in a few hours. NO ONE IS BEING ALLOWED THROUGH RIGHT NOW. NO ONE! They are putting equipment in place to get started.

Ben”
9:30 am – all local stations reporting Highway One closed, with no ETA for opening.

8:30 – that blue skies didn’t last long, up here, anyway.

7:30 am – blue skies – great news for CT. NWS continues scattered shower activity over most of the region.

Detail Information
6:51 AM 4 [10] 1039 ETAC OFCR CROSSON
6:45 AM 3 [7] SIG ALERT SENT
6:36 AM 2 [4] THERE IS NO ETA FOR OPENING AT THIS TIME
6:35 AM 1 [1] **HWY 1 IS CLOSED **

Unknown at this time whether this is the Partington Slide, or another, as Partington wasn’t being reported by CHP yesterday afternoon and evening. It is listed as 23 mm 1, which would be Lucia.

There were periods of extremely heavy rainfall here last night, beginning around six pm, so this could be anywhere. My rain gauge is showing just under an inch. Will update as I obtain more information.

Jade Festival, 2012 & Rocky Creek Viaduct closure update

This morning, all campgrounds down here on the South Coast were full in anticipation of the Jade Festival. The heat wave has broken, so expect foggy and chilly mornings, burning off in the afternoon for beautiful sunshiny afternoons. The festival starts tomorrow at noon and continues Saturday and Sunday from 10-6 pm. Our wonderful Jewell of the South Coast is the featured star, with a supporting cast of great food, live music and wonderful friendly people. This is a family gathering, on a school, so no drugs or alcohol are permitted on site. Fur kids must be on a leash.

New schedule for viaduct closure:

HIGHWAY 1/ROCKY CREEK VIADUCT PROJECT IS UNDERWAY—
OVERNIGHT CLOSURES TO BEGIN OCTOBER 15

MONTEREY COUNTY – After further consultation with the contractor, the hours
for full closures of Hwy. 1 at Rocky Creek (PM 59.5) will be 9 pm to 7 am
beginning Monday, October 15 through the end of February, Caltrans
officials have announced.

Roadwork will occur seven days a week, 24/7 with one-way signalized traffic
control. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time. However, full
overnight closures will take place five nights a week Sundays through
Thursdays. No full closures will occur on Friday/Saturday nights.

The project to construct a permanent viaduct about 15 miles south of Carmel
near the Rocky Creek Bridge along Highway 1 began on Sept. 4. Completion is
scheduled by Labor Day 2013, weather permitting.

Daily roadwork schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions
and other factors.

If my calculations are correct, that is four and one-half months of overnight closures, five days a week.

Rocky Creek Viaduct closure, press release number 1

This came yesterday, but I had already provided the basic info through advance notice and had some other things I wanted to post about. These notices of closures and the impact on community and visitors will hopefully develop a rhythm of their own, and I will only be posting about this once a week, but until that rhythm gets established, I’ll just go with it here.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HIGHWAY 1/ROCKY CREEK VIADUCT PROJECT IS UNDERWAY—
OVERNIGHT CLOSURES TO BEGIN OCTOBER 11

MONTEREY COUNTY – Following the survey results from the Big Sur community,
the hours for full closures of Hwy. 1 at Rocky Creek will be 9 pm to 7 am
beginning Thursday, Oct. 11 through the end of February, Caltrans officials
have announced.

Roadwork will occur seven days a week, 24/7 with one-way signalized traffic
control. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time. However, full
overnight closures will take place five nights a week Sundays through
Thursdays.

The project to construct a permanent viaduct about 15 miles south of Carmel
near the Rocky Creek Bridge along Highway 1 began on Sept. 4. Completion is
scheduled by Labor Day 2013, weather permitting.

This project came about after a roadway slipout caused severe damage to the
southbound lane and required Hwy. 1 to be closed from north of Big Sur and
south of Carmel at Rocky Creek from March 17 through April 16, 2011. The
contractor for this $12 million project is Golden State Bridge Inc. of
Martinez, CA

In order to minimize traffic impact as part of the project, there will be
advance notification for motorists, residents and businesses via a traffic
hotline, electronic message signs and email notifications.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving
through highway work zones.

For more information, please visit: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/projects/
or contact the Hwy. 1 Cambria to Carmel Toll-Free Hotline at 888-836-0866.”

Storm Watch, 11/1/08

HEADS UP, EVERYONE!

jack is reporting: Posted by Jack

Mud is flowing onto Hwy 1 between Fernwood and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Redwood Creek is flowing over the culvert bridge/driveway inside the park.

9 PM Highway One reported closed 4 miles south of Lucia. Cal-Trans reports:   [IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA]

IS CLOSED FROM 7.9 MI NORTH OF GORDA TO 6.2 MI NORTH OF PFEIFFER BURNS
STATE PARK (MONTEREY CO) AT 2053 HRS ON 11/1/08 – DUE TO ROCKS IN THE ROADWAY –
MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

I am on back-up power, so won’t be reporting until tomorrow am, but Dave Allen reports that the rains are significant in Carmel, about an hour ago, which means it will be arriving here shortly. PLEASE, stay safe, everyone!

6:30 PM – we are just over 1/2 an inch at the moment, around .6. So far, so good. However, I note roadway flooding is being reported in the NB lane of Highway 17 up in Santa Cruz County at the moment. Hope that is not indicative of what is coming our way. According to the NOAA precipitation map (see 2008 Winter Conditions link) Ben Lomand has received 3.4 inches in the last 24 hours. Mining Ridge (closest to me of the permanent reporting gauges) is showing .67, consistent with what I am reporting.

1/2 inch by 4:30 PM

Only 1/4 inch by 2 PM.

11:15 AM – Rain has begun, a little early. What better way to spend a Saturday than watching the rain gauge? Oh, and you might note, I added a new link category, “2008 Winter Conditions” to the blog roll, and turned off some of the fire-related ones. Here you will find links to Cal-Trans, CHP, Weather, and surfire2008. While I will post important information from all sites here, you may also want to check yourself. The fire-related links be back next fire season. For the next four months or so, 2008 Winter Conditions will be much more important for us to stay abreast. I will add more helpful links, as I find them.

9:30 AM – Winds picking up. Everything is either covered, closed, and/or battened down. Rain gauge emptied. I am ready. Here’s the national weather report:

DAY ONE...SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT
A MUCH STRONGER COLD FRONT WILL AFFECT THE REGION WITH 1-3 INCHES
OF RAIN POSSIBLE IN THE WETTER LOCATIONS AS WELL AS A CHANCE OF
THUNDERSTORMS. LOCALLY STRONG WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN ARE POSSIBLE
LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING. THE RECENTLY BURNED
AREAS OF MONTEREY AND SANTA CRUZ COUNTIES WILL NEED TO BE
MONITORED CLOSELY AS HEAVY RAINFALL APPEARS IMMINENT.

7:30 AM – No rain overnight. Season total = .50 inches. Will report throughout the day.
