New Slide Last Night between JPBurns and Burns Creek (MM 35) moves closure from Lucia (for Paul’s Slide) To Fuller’s for this one. Mud Creek still shut also. In other words, you can’t get there from here, or from pretty much anywhere for now. Cambria to Ragged Point still open and Carmel to Coast Gallery open for the time being.

What a photo! What a challenge! What a mess! These are the same people who lost houses in the Basin Fire of 2008. They are a tough group. Thanks for sharing your world, Sula.

On another note, repairing this road will be an expensive and private affair. It has been suggested that the road association might want to set up a fund that people could donate to. Carmel Pine Cone indicates it will be 1/2 million dollars to fix. Ouch! I will keep you posted if I learn more.

2d Partington Slide, 12/26/12

20121226-172331.jpg

These first two photos are CalTrans photos, this is what it looked like BEFORE RK got there. the next six are by Rock Knocker, and you can see the “after” of the first CT photo is number 6 in RK’s. (okay, CT photos not loading right away, so be back in a bit.)

This gives you an idea of what is going on …

20121226-133953.jpg

This shows what is on the verge on coming down, and helps to show why CT needs to keep this closed while they figure out how to deal with this.

20121226-134415.jpg

It takes a village to keep THIS ROAD open … And geologists, and engineers, and heavy equipment operators, and machines!

Another mudslide

It is cleared. Photo. Y Debbie Reed

9:30 am – another slide, this one near River Inn. Only blocking 1/2 a lane, so not closing road. Should be able to get clear in no time, but considering that we have more rain on the way for the next two days, could be a precursor of things to come. Please be safe out there!

Partington Slide photos

The following four photos were sent to me by Partington Ridge resident Jim Merz. Excellent photos, and clearly show the instability, and the massive nature of the slide.

And here is one from Magnus Toren that shows what none of the others show – the top of the slide, which demonstrates, as Rock Knocker says, “It ain’t done, yet!”

GBS CLEARED BOULDER AT RAIN ROCKS, PER LOCAL

10:30 pm – local says GBS cleared boulder and were letting people through. It is still “officially” closed as far as I know.

9:15 pm – NOTICE – Just got a call from CT PR, Collin Jones. A slide at Rain Rocks, MM 21has the highway closed From Ragged Point to Big Sur MM 71 to 41. Will reassess the situation in the am. I’ll keep you all updated. One can get to big Sur and Lucia from the north, but not from the south.

Thanks bigsurdeb for having my back and being this blog’s incredible back-up! You mean the world to us!

Storm Report & Road Closure

9:00 pm – conserving power for posting tomorrow, first light, and also conserving my own power, as I have been sick with a nasty grunge for DAYS!! Check back in the am, and I will post what I can find out.

6:45 pm – I have received another 1/4 inch in the last 45 minutes. It is POURING, some hail, too. Imagine being inside a tin can with someone shooting BBs at you. That is what it is like up here, at the moment.

6:00 pm – This is from various sources:

Highway 1 is closed in both directions because of a mud slide. The CHP website has the south end closure at MM 44 (Nepenthe), and the north closure at 46, I believe, and cars are being turned around in both directions. Per CHP, closure all night, crew to clear in am. Reports are that this mudslide is significant, and one can NOT get through, even locals. Updates, as available, and my battery power allows.

It is being reported that the mudslide is at the Big Sur River in the State Park, and that the mud  is near the top of the K-rails surrounding the Big Sur Lodge, and that same water has seeped into the Lodge itself. If my friends who live near-by send me any photos tomorrow, I will be sure and post them.

Also, it is raining like crazy up here, and I received 3/4″ since 8 am. Season rain totals tomorrow.
