AIDS bicycle event next week, but NOT through Big Sur

AIDS/LIFE CYCLE BICYCLE RIDE ON CENTRAL COAST NEXT WEEK

 CENTRAL COAST – The AIDS/Life Cycle Bicycle Ride will move through Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties next week. The cyclists will use the state highway system during the daytime hours between 6:30 am and 7 pm in the following locations:

  • Sunday, June 2, the riders will use southbound State Route 1 and US 101 before arriving at Harvey West Park in Santa Cruz County during the afternoon hours.
  • On Monday, June 3, the riders will leave Santa Cruz and use portions of southbound State Route 1 and US Highway 101 ending their day at San Lorenzo County Park in King City in Monterey County.
  • On Tuesday, June 4, the riders will leave King City and use a portion of southbound US Highway 101 before reaching the Paso Robles Fairgrounds in San Luis Obispo County.
  • On Wednesday, June 5, the cyclists will leave Paso Robles using Hwy. 46 West to Hwy. 1 south through Morro Bay and Pismo Beach before reaching Preisker Park in Santa Maria in Santa Barbara County.
  • On Thursday, June 6, the cyclists will leave Santa Maria towards State Route 1 and continue south ending their day at Ryon Memorial Park in Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.
  • On Friday, June 7, the riders will leave Lompoc and use State Route 246, State Route 1 and US Highway 101 towards southern Santa Barbara County before ending their day at San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura County.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be present to maintain a safe environment for motorists, cyclists and support vehicles.  The riders will travel single file with the flow of traffic.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.

Msg from Rep Panetta re: Oil Drilling on Public Lands on the Central Coast

 

Dear Neighbor,

The administration just announced a proposal to open over 700,000 acres of public land on the central coast of California to new oil and gas drilling. Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Fresno counties are included in the proposal.

Our community is concerned about expanded oil and gas exploitation on the Central Coast. You can share your opinion of the proposal directly with the Administration during the next 27 days, through June 9, 2019.

In Congress, I have cosponsored bills that would prohibit oil and gas exploration and leasing on our public lands and off of our coast. AMGEN BICYCLE RACE TO MOVE THROUGH MONTEREY, SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES NEXT WEEK

 CENTRAL COAST – Stages Four and Five of The Amgen Tour of California Bicycle Race will move through Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties next week using portions of the state highway system in the following locations during the daytime hours.

  • On Wednesday, May 15, the cyclists will leave Laguna Seca at 10 am and will use portions of State Routes 68 and 218 before traveling south on Highway 1 from Monterey before reaching Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County at 3:45 pm.
  • On Thursday, May 16, the cyclists leave Pismo Beach at 10 am using Highway 1 before using portions of State Routes 154 and 192 in Santa Barbara County.  The cyclists will end their day at 3:45 pm in Ventura County.

The CHP will oversee traffic control during these moving closures.  Electronic message signs will be activated to inform the public about the cyclists and support vehicles.  The public may learn more about this event at:   http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/

Big Sur Fire Hosts Community Open House at Station 1

Celebrating 45 Years of Emergency Services in Big Sur

Big Sur, CA – Big Sur Fire (BSF) announces a Community Open House celebrating its 45th Anniversary of serving Big Sur Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 1 pm until 4 pm at Station 1 (47900 Highway 1) in Big Sur.

Big Sur Fire was formed in 1974 to provide structure fire protection for the residents and businesses in the Big Sur area.  BSF now provides both structure and wildland fire protection, along with rescue and emergency medical response for the Big Sur community and its over 5 million annual visitors. BSF remains an all-volunteer company, with about 25 members, responding to an area which covers almost 60 miles of coastline along Highway One.  

May 4 also marks the celebration of International Firefighters’ Day – a time where the world’s community can recognize and honor the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.  The program honoring all current and past Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade members (the original incorporated name) will be held at 2: 30 pm.  Former BSF Firefighter John Handy will be the Master of Ceremonies for the event.  

Big Sur Fire will have its apparatus on display and firefighters are available to answer questions.  The day will include photos with fire apparatus; demonstrations of fire equipment; and lots of good food provided by Big Sur’s finest.  Donations are coming from Treebones; Esalen Institute; Coast Gallery & Café; Deetjen’s; Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn; Big Sur Bakery; Big Sur Taphouse; Fernwood; and Big Sur River Inn.

“We are so fortunate to have the support from our Big Sur community for this special 45thAnniversary Celebration.  Post Ranch Inn and all of the fine restaurants in Big Sur have made this day possible,” Big Sur Fire Chief Matt Harris said. “We look forward to seeing many of our old friends who have participated in the Brigade over these past 45 years.”

 

Park and Shuttle will be at Post Ranch Inn.

 BIG SUR INTERNATIONAL MARATHON BEGINS THIS SUNDAY, APRIL 28

MONTEREY COUNTY (CARMEL/BIG SUR) – The Big Sur International Marathon will take place along Highway 1 on Sunday, April 28 beginning at 7:00 a.m.

This event will begin in Big Sur and will end at Rio Road in Carmel.

Traffic on Highway 1 will be restricted from 6:00 am until 1:30 pm from Sycamore Canyon Road to Carmel Valley Road. During this highway closure, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will use the northbound lane to lead caravans of traffic in alternating directions at three different intervals during this time.

The CHP will also manage a closure for left turns from Carmel Valley Road onto southbound Hwy. 1 from 3:30 am until 1:30 pm.

Approximately 4,700 people are expected to participate in this marathon with another 3,000 participating in shorter events.

Volunteers Needed to Preserve Big Sur Coast
Heavy Rains Quench Drought But Spur Explosion Of Invasive Species

Apr. 16, 2019 / PRZen / BIG SUR, Calif. — While winter rains have brought welcome relief to California’s drought conditions, they unfortunately are also fueling an explosion of nonnative plants that threatens Big Sur’s world-renowned natural resources. Nature Corps, a nonprofit volunteer conservation organization, is inviting individuals, families, and employee groups to stem this invasion by participating in a critical volunteer weekend scheduled for May 17-19, 2019.

The Big Sur coast of California is known as the “greatest meeting of land and water in the world,” and has been described as a “national treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it.”

Volunteers are urgently needed to preserve Big Sur’s coastal mountain range where now smaller populations of nonnative flora are poised to overtake many acres of native habitat. Over time, these nonnatives will significant impact wildlife by reducing their sources of food and breeding habitat.
