Catching up is hard to do …

Thank you for your notes, calls, and concerns everyone! It is soooo great to know you all care, and read this silly little blog. It is also nice to have internet again. I have a photo I prepared this weekend for your enjoyment, which I will post below. I also have February’s Wildflowers that I took today, and Dave Allen tells me that somewhere buried in my 350 emails, is one from him with shots of our stupendous waves. And if I can’t find that, Rock Knocker has some shots for me. And finally, of course, we have the incoming storm to track. So, bigsurkate will be very busy and very active for the next few days.

On Saturday, a gorgeous day in the 70’s, I had company. Rare company. I had Sarah from Ohio, Peter from Washington, Avis from Lucia, and the Rock Knocker from the next mountain over. RK left first, and after Sarah, Peter, and Avis left, I was visited by this sight. What a gorgeous day on the mountain!

The Rock

I am really tired of storms, and need to take a short photography break. I have been exploring another photographer that my artist friend, Leslie White introduced me to, and I am enthralled with her work out of Australia. She is Kirsty and her work is here. I have been “stuck” on “storm watch” for too long now. So here is my first offering:

I have driven by and photographed this Morro Bay landmark so many times, but I’ve never been quite satisfied with it. This day, a few weeks ago, the light intrigued me, so I stopped. I waited as the couple walked into my view and saw this …

One of my readers took the original, adjusted highlights, midtones, and shadows in a photo software (he or she didn’t say which one) and came up with this much brighter version, so I’ve replaced the original. The reader said it took all of 30 seconds, so this is something I need to add to my arsenal! This is much better

End of the Day

When words fail me, a sunset will do. I am learning a lot about white balance, shooting sunsets. This was one of 5, the closest in colors to what I actually was witnessing.

I do have a request from an organization in D.C. I will post here later today.

Weather discussion still indicates a storm coming through late Monday/early Tuesday. A smaller storm Friday into Saturday, and then a much bigger storm Sunday through next Wednesday. That one is still a ways out, and may be modified (will?) as it gets closer.

**ROAD CLOSURE** And finally, don’t forget, beginning at 8 pm this evening, Highway One will be closed 1 mile north of Ragged Point from 8 pm until 5 am, continuing each night until 5 am Friday morning. I’ll bet this is a boon to Ragged Point!

A Big Sur Christmas

Tonight, around 6 pm Stacey, a reader of this blog, posted a notice about 2 lost dogs on my “Let there be peace” posting. Strange, I thought. Those sound like my neighbors dogs. In the next hour or so, I called my neighbor, went to his house, twice, determined my neighbor was out of town, and the dog sitter said the dogs were missing. He was just sitting there, doing nothing. He wasn’t looking for them.

I notified Stacey that the dogs were indeed my neighbor’s dogs. She knew my neighbor, and worked with him. So Stacey and her husband went out on Christmas Day evening to look for the dogs, and thankfully, found them and took them home. This is probably the best Christmas gift my neighbor got this year. This is what Big Sur does. We take care of each other, and our fur kids. Thank you Stacey for caring and taking the time on this holiday to recover my neighbor’s fur kids for him.

On another note, the photos below depict what often happens on a Big Sur Christmas — gifts of Jade.

Thank you, CK. What Christmas is complete without the Big Sur Jade?

… and let it begin with me. These are all objects in my cottage, put together for this year’s web-based Christmas Card.

And yesterday, Christmas Eve., in gorgeous sunshine, I finally planted the Tulips that were beginning to sprout, and tossed handfuls of wildflower seeds in the raised bed I had prepared. My gift to myself this season is the planting, the sprouting, and the flowering of nature outside my cottage door. That, and the Makita driller & driver set I found on sale at that Orange Store! A gal’s gotta have her own driller & driver! (my other one was eaten by the dogs, a few years back.)

Today, Christmas Day, I will be attending a Christmas Open House, one mountain south of me — a chance to see neighbors and friends I only get to see a couple of times a year. Merry Christmas, everyone!

May your holidays be joyful, filled with laughter, family, and friends.
And may peace fill our days in 2010.

A few Holiday shots for the next few days, so that I can wish everyone a very happy holiday season!

I am still keeping an eye on the weather, but nothing predicted until Saturday evening. If that changes, I will note the change in my blog.
