Weather Report, 10/16/17-dry lightning Tues?

I hate posting 3 times in one day, but sometimes, events warrant it. Keep your eye on your local weather reports…this could get dicey tomorrow. Let’s hope it doesn’t. From NWS, Monterey:

”Updated the afternoon forecast package to include a mention of a slight chance of dry thunderstorms primarily over Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito county for Tuesday afternoon. There is a surge of moisture around 600mb coupling with some elevated instability on the southwestern flank of the exiting ridge. Satellite imagery already shows an area of cooler cloud tops in an area the size of Texas that the National Hurricane Center gives a 30% chance of forming into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours. Should this complex strengthen into a cyclone, we would likely need to make updates to the forecast, so please keep close attention to any updates regarding this.” Heads up. Fortunately, the USFS has started recon flights after these events, if it should occur.

From Martha Karstens re: Partington Fire

All,

Shortly after 09:00 this morning the Fire Brigade was paged out for a vegetation fire in Partington Cove. State Parks maintenance had seen it and reported it. They started to fight the fire with their hand tools the best they could. Brigade Captain Jon Knight was on scene very quickly with one more FF and gave an excellent size up, about a 100′ x 100′ area burning on the East side of the highway about a 1/4 mile up the canyon. All the homes up on Partington were in the cross hairs once again. We started SO in case any evacuations were needed.

As the other Brigade members arrived on scene they did an excellent job controlling the fire, and deploying a pump in the river for a continuous water supply. They were able to stop the spread in short order avoiding what could have been a devastating result had it spread up the hillside to the homes above.

This was again an example of the initial response by the Fire Brigade making a difference! We had an excellent response, with over a dozen Brigade members and 3 engines on scene and 2 water tenders cancelled enroute. USFS E17 and B12 also arrived on scene and several hours later we turned the fire area over to them. They were going to stay in the area until this evening and then come back again tomorrow to make sure there were no flare ups.

This fire was started by an illegal campfire, 2 nights ago we were paged out for 2 other campfires, one of which was cited. It is unbelievable to me why with half the state on fire anyone would think it was a good idea to have any fire.

A good job well done by all!!

Martha Karstens,
BSVFB Fire Chief

Fire in Partington Canyon

BSVFD called out to a spot fire in Partington Canyon. It is being extinguished, 100 by 100 spot, probable illegal camp fire, possible suspect on foot southbound near JP burns walking in Black clothing. Be on the look out and report to MCSO.

It is very windy up here, not sure about in Partington Canyon. Rain expected Thursday night (Thursday afternoon for the Sonoma Fires) and it can’t get here too soon – about 1/10 – 1/4 of an inch. Probably more up here in the higher elevations

This little history lesson started because Janet (Sommerville) Hardisty asked me to put her in contact with Sylvia Deen Trotter Anderson, and thus the exchanges began, and both ladies were gracious enough to keep me in the conversation so I could learn some local history and share in the photographs.

A couple of photos from the 50-60’s from Sylvia Deen (Trotter) Anderson’s collection:

The people in the photo below are Janet Sommerville’s parents, and Sylvia Trotter Anderson’s parents, Walter Trotter and wife Guelda [gwel-dah] (Fenton) Trotter.  Janet’s mother, Betty is the one on the right. The two on the left, I believe are Walter Trotter and the gal in the middle of Janet’s dad and Trotter is Janet McChesney. Please correct me if I  am wrong, ladies.😘

From Janet: “The lady sitting by your dad is Janet McChesney, they lived at the main house at the Forest Service Station, as Doug/Mac was head in Big Sur at that time, so this would of had to been anywhere from sometime in the 50’s to 1961 as the girls (Kathy, Nancy, & Maryjane) moved away before Capt. Cooper opened up on the hill in 1962. The other lady seems familiar, but I’m not really sure??”

A Couple more – this one of the classroom, Sylvia found from a collection at the University of Wisconsin, of all places:

“Up close with back to camera is Miss Morrisay. Then the girl on the right with hair band is cousin Susan/Susie Brazil, almost looks like back of head of Kip Hopkins. Tal Bradford is the fellow with fingers under his nose I think. Blonde in the middle almost looks like a Morganwrath, but don’t think it is. I have school photos with some of these kids in it, so they were a year ahead of me, maybe a Warren and almost looks like Billy Royer at the far right hand under chin.” (Description by Sylvia)

From Janet: “Lets see, I think those are David Lindley’s ears next to Susie (Kaye Short’s grandson), then we have Lincoln Curtis in front row by Miss Morrisay, Ron Warren, then we move over to Blonde, which is Jeanette Ramsdell,
next to her is I think Raymond Niemeyer, can’t remember the guys names on the right, but I remember them(Bruce?). And like you said, Tal, and then I think Lorna something and maybe Kate Healey’s head, and no idea on the other.”

The above is from the University of Wisconsin archives. It is the little red school house. It sat south of MAF approximately where the CT housing is now.

“I did have this one however….. These two girls in detail…Their mother was Rowena (Davis) Kelly-Lee our school teacher. The elder/taller girl is Dorothy Kelly and the younger/smaller one is Rowena “Punky” Kelly. Punky, I’m sure you will recall drowned at Post’s area in Jul of 1964. I was 8 and you probably 10-11. Cousin Judy Trotter-Weidman was best friends with Punky and about aged 12. She had a hard time dealing with Punky’s passing.
This is the backside of the old Pfeiffer School if memory serves me as I was in the small room for the 1st and 2nd graders with Mrs. Kelly and you “older students”- ha-ha were with Miss Morrisey. We could go out that door right to the play area.”

Below,  “Sorry another bad photo, but this one I did remember a bit more about! L-R
Leigh Hartman Toldi, ME Sylvia, in back ?Char Piaz, Janie Curtis, then maybe Krista Mackowski, Collett Mason [french sounding]and Janet Sommerville. Found the program that went with this awhile back as well. Hard to believe we has such stuff in Big Sur with such a wonder teacher, Lillie/Lily Selvig. Still have the costume that her son Dirk wore for one of the ballet plays as a joker. What a hoot!! Sylvia”

Santa Rosa fire map

KTVU has created an interactive map that allows the user to go street-by-street to determine what burned and what didn’t. The link is KTVU interactive street map

Thanks, Denise for sending this to me. For anyone with family or friends in Santa Rosa, this will help.

Friday the 13th and da bridge, da bridge

The excitement is palpable in Big Sur today. Dignitaries, journalists, locals, and tourists will converge in an hour on a little bridge that no one knew was there … until Feb of 2017 when a local man discovered it was cracked. He reported it, and the rest is history. (Edited due to this blasted self-spell-checking iPad. It thinks it is smarter than me, but chooses the wrong words! 10/14)

It will be a celebration. It will be a happy time. It will be a zoo. I will quietly give thanks and celebrate up here today, and see it for myself early next week, when the immediate “newness” has worn off. For those going…enjoy, take photos, break out of the isolation this has brought to the south side. I will see the north side next week and celebrate then with them.

Waste Management begins normal service Monday

Please see the update for Big Sur and Solid Waste:

The Big Sur bridge will be open beginning this Friday, October 13 at 5pm. We [WM, Inc] will resume normal routes beginning the week of Monday, October 16.
One more note, we will not be servicing south of the landslide. Collection services will be provided to customers north of the landslide.

Thanks,
Rob

While Rob doesn’t mention it, the temporary dumpsters will probably be removed next week as well.
