At 9 am this morning, the rocks have been cleared, and Highway One reopens.
From Cal Trans: “UPDATE: Hwy1 south of BigSur is fully OPEN as of 9am. This was a standard overnight closure, very common after heavy rainfall to ensure the safety of travelers & work crews. Happy T-Day, everyone.”
I miss these Thanksgivings in Jo-anne’s garage, and the people who have since moved away…I am thankful for you all and count my blessings that you are in my life. I am thankful for all the friends I have met through this blog for the last 10 years, and for what we have shared together – happy and painful. We have a wonderful community of Big Surians now spread over a great distance from Thailand to Switzerland and beyond. We are family.

5:30 pm – the last hour and 1/2 has been gnarly. Downpours, and inch an hour or more, way over 2” – finished changing my links (I think) so you can check out the 24 hour rain totals in the links to the right. Lost my internet in the height of it, as did a few others.
4 pm – hit the 1″ mark, and now I am busy updating my links so fire is gone and rain is here…

Today, is all about the rain. Comment when it hits where you are, and let us know where that is! So far my day has been about making this welcomed, but forgotten, transition – making sure I stocked the inside wood box, and filled the back-up generator (given the no sun), and I have built a small fire to take the morning chill off, oh, and coffee is in hand.
None today. I am taking the day off to start preparations for my Thanksgiving Dinner and yesterday I had to shop for same.

As the Big Sur Fire Board of Directors has decided to implement their succession plan please join me in welcoming Deputy Chief Matt Harris when he assumes the position of Chief on January 1, 2019.
I have so appreciated all of your help, friendship and support over the years, in particular after the devastating Pfeiffer Fire.
I know you all will be equally supportive of Matt going forward and he will make an excellent Chief!
After 42 years in EMS, 14 with the American Red Cross Big Sur Ambulance and almost 28 with Big Sur Fire, wearing a pager and being on call 24/7, I will now see how “normal” people live. You may no longer even recognize me without driving my white Big Sur Fire truck, and yes Nadine, I will now wear another color besides blue!

Good news for Big Sur. Looks like we can expect about an inch on Thanksgiving through 4 pm Friday. I’ll take it.
From Weather West, aka, Daniel Swain: “The good news: significant, perhaps even fire “season ending” rains possible across much of Northern California by late next week. The bad news: some models suggesting heavy rainfall capable of causing significant post-fire flood/debris flow concerns near #CampFire.” Looks like Big Sur is in the 2 to 3” area. So, is this significant enough to close the gates on Mud Creek and Paul’s Slide? I guess we will see 48 hours out.
