Clueless in Big Sur, 4/20/15

I’ll start, but send me any experiences you wish to share, and, if they have a point, but use humor to make it, I will publish … With credit or anonymously, as you prefer. I’ve noticed that Saturday night the wilderness visitors are a bit stranger than those who come on Friday night. I am at a loss to explain the difference.

This past Saturday, late afternoon, early evening, I came upon several cars heading up Plaskett. One, a Subaru Outback didn’t want to pull over, so I rode his tail up Plaskett. From Gary’s driveway  until the bull frog, this guy wouldn’t pull over. Finally, a wide spot, and I was able to pass. I watched him in the rear view mirror, but he held back. I gave him no more thought. I needed to pee, but there were campers at all my usual spots, so I waited until I got to my gate. 

As I opened my Jeep door and went to get out, I was suddenly surrounded by 3 guys from the Subaru Outback. They were startled by my gate, and wanted to get through. “We have to get through, we are meeting friends at Prewitt Ridge camp.” Really? Demanding I let them through? Oh, yeah, like that’s going to work. “No, you can’t go through.” “But, our GPS sent us this way.”  “I don’t care if your mother sent you this way. You cant come through. Now, turn around, go down to the highway and go up Nacimiento. Goodbye.”

Today, I dug into the archives. I have misplaced my battery charger for my camera. I still have the bowels of my Jeep, behind the seats, where everything ends up, to search, but after that, I give up! If I’ve posted these before, forgive me, I’ve lost track.

I have meant to post these for quite some time, but always seem to get distracted. Jeff Mallory graciously let me tour Emile Normans house quite some time ago, and I always wanted to post these photos taken there. KQED did a lovely documentary of the mans life that I thoroughly enjoyed also. I came  away from both in awe of the man’s genius.

  

  

   

 

   

  

The entire house is a work of art, and Emile did it all. If I can find the link to the documentary, I will post it here. Worth the time to watch it, as his was a fascinating life.

Big Sur Fashion Show canceled for this year

Dear Fashion Friends and Fans,

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting our 2015 date and the anticipated
call for designers announcement. Your fearless and dedicated team of BBBIS (Big
Big Big Sur Fashion Show) have been working diligently through the fall and
winter as we’ve been called to face new challenges for the show. Namely, the
challenge of a venue. While Henry Miller Library remains our fiscal sponsor and
most dedicated partner, our show has outgrown their beautiful space and we have
been doing a great deal of research for another Big Sur location where we can
safety and excitedly host the 800+ audience members, volunteers, sponsors and
participants that make up this amazing event.

After months of research without a clear solution emerging, we just made the
difficult committee decision that it is time for us to take a one year hiatus so
we can adequately to secure and plan for our new venue. After six years we are
taking a leap year!

We know this will be a disappointment to many of you, as it is to us. We didn’t
make the decision lightly, and it’s an incredible testament to you that we
simply can’t responsibly host this event anywhere with less than an 800 person
capacity. (After all, our tickets last year sold out in 7 seconds!) But we are
sooooooo pumped to take this amazing event to the next level in 2016, and our
Bohemian Recipes/ Flower Power themes will be waiting for us next spring.

We are prepared to move the show to Carmel or Monterey if the perfect Big Sur
spot is not revealed in 2016, although Big Sur is unquestionably our mission #1!
We very much welcome your ideas and input if you know of a public or private
property in Big Sur that can accommodate those numbers, with alcohol sales and
parking.

In lieu of the full affair this year, we are hosting a short series of catered
dinner theater evenings this spring at Henry Miller with inaugural screenings of
Lynette Tolentino’s full-length documentary about the big Big BIG Sur Fashion
Show, Ashes to Art. We are also still planning to host the Kid’s Fashion Show
costume workshops and runway event. Stay tuned for details!

We love you and are so grateful for your flexibility and patience as we leap to
new heights in 2016!

Most years, I have gone to my friend Jo-Anne’s for Thanksgiving. Today is her last, due to new adventures on her horizon. I am honored to share her friendship. This is how she decorates her table.

Mid Coast Fire Brigade Fundraiser

Dear community,

It is my pleasure to inform you that Mid Coast Fire Brigade is creating an Ocean Rescue Division!

As you may or may not know, our coastline in Monterey County is both dynamic and deadly. We respond to multiple coastal incidents every year. Up until this point, Mid Coast Fire Brigade has been unable to enter the water to access victims due to a lack of equipment and trained responders. The results for these victims are often deadly.

It is our goal to certify qualified members of our Brigade so we will be able to enter the water and may be able to prevent loss of life and respond to aquatic emergencies, in and around our area.

We are currently fundraising so that we can purchase necessary equipment. As we are a volunteer department, we must reach out to our community from time to ask for support.

Our first fundraising event is:

Location: American Legion Post Dolores street Carmel, Ca

Date: December 20, 2014

Time: 4:00pm-1:00am

Cost: $10 door (includes donation + raffle ticket)

The Health Center could not exist without the continuing support of our generous donors. We rely on donations and grants to provide 65% of the cost of bringing you the local high quality health care service you have come to expect.

This year, in order to maximize the donations we receive, we are participating in Monterey County Gives (MC Gives) a program sponsored by the Monterey County Weekly through the Community Foundation for Monterey County. MC Gives selected Big Sur Health Center as one of the charities to receive matching funds from the Weekly’s Community Fund at the Foundation.

You are receiving this email as we hope you will choose to make a donation through MC Gives. All donations made through MC Gives after November 13, 2014 will be matched by the Foundation at the close of the campaign on December 31, 2014. Last year, participating charities received an additional 14% through MC Gives.
