Storm Report, 2/7/15

image3:30 pm – only up another .12″ but look at what’s on tap for tomorrow?

10:45 am – rain has picked up again, with a rate of 1.31″/hour, for a total thus far today of 1.23″ and 2.75″for the storm. It is supposed to be scattered today, with the heavy rain expected tomorrow. That will be interesting, that’s for sure.

6:00 am – woke to 2.42″ for the storm, and it is still raining. Got just under an inch since midnight, and given the 1″ we got before I turned in for the night, it looks like the .42″ came between 10 and 12 while I lay quietly oblivious and sound asleep. Okay, let me catch up with traffic, have my coffee, and then I’ll be back. Please feel free to share your totals.Cal, how did you far out there by Lake Nacimiento?

Storm Report, 2/6/15

image10:00 – there’s the first inch. Will be interesting to see what it is in the am. And here is the current radar. Not sure if WordPress will insert at the top or bottom. Sorry. Works differently on an iPad than a computer.

9:15 – okay, it is now officially remaining cats and dogs per my weather station. Up to .75″ now.

9:00 pm – Already another .22″ in the last 1/2 hour. This is fun – the wind, not so much.

8:30 pm – while rain began at 4:47 pm down here, amidst the wind event that started last night. It got up to 41 mph this afternoon, and it is still blowing. But the rain is the issue. By 8 pm, I still only had, I think, about .15″ but within the next 1/2 hour, was up to .46″ and hit a high rain rate of over 2 and a 1/4″ an hour. Wind is so loud, I can’t even hear the rain, ranging from 20-30 mph, currently. Santa Cruz appears to be having all sorts of weather-related road issues. How is it where you are? What are your rain totals? Share in the comment section below.

Upcoming Storm

imageHaving trouble with WordPress. Hope to get it straightened out by tomorrow. I will post the finalists in the photo contest next week for voting, after the storm passes.

Storm predicted for later in week

MAIN FOCUS OF THE SHIFT REMAINS ON THE SECOND HALF OF THE WEEK AS
THE RIDGE OVERHEAD IS REPLACED BY A MOIST WEST-SOUTHWEST FLOW
ALOFT. THIS WILL ALLOW PW VALUES POTENTIALLY EXCEEDING 1.5 INCHES
TO MOVE ACROSS OUR REGION. THIS WILL BRING RAIN BACK INTO THE
PICTURE STARING OVER THE NORTH BAY ON THURSDAY AND EVENTUALLY
ACROSS THE ENTIRE CWA. RAIN CHANCES WILL CONTINUE INTO THE
WEEKEND. SIMILAR TO PREVIOUS MODEL RUNS…ALL INDICATIONS ARE THE
GREATEST ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE OVER THE NORTH BAY WITH AMOUNTS
GENERALLY DECREASING THE FARTHER SOUTH YOU GO. LATEST CNRFC
NUMBERS SHOW LOCALLY 3 TO 5 INCHES BY LATE SATURDAY NIGHT IN SONOMA
COUNTY…2 TO 3 INCHES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE NORTH BAY PLUS SC
MOUNTAINS AND THE SANTA LUCIAS…1 TO 2 INCHES FOR MOST OF SF
BAY…HALF AN INCH TO AN INCH FOR THE SOUTH BAY AND THE REMAINDER
OF THE CWA. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL IS LIKELY ON SUNDAY SO 6 DAY
NUMBERS ISSUED TOMORROW SHOULD SEE EVEN HIGHER VALUES.

WILL ISSUE AN SPS THIS MORNING AS A HEADS UP AND WILL LIKELY
INCREASE THE POPS PLUS MENTION OF HEAVY RAIN IN THE GRIDS. WILL
CONTINUE TO HIGHLIGHT THAT THE OVERALL CONFIDENCE IS HIGH WHILE THE
CONFIDENCE FOR THE SOUTHERN EXTENT OF THE HEAVIER RAIN REMAINS
QUITE A BIT LOWER.

Rain in our Future?

From my favorite SLO Weathercaster, John Lindsey: 1/20 “At this time, the ridge of high pressure begins to weaken early next week followed by increasing chances of rain near mid-week. Unsettled weather is expected to continue through February.”

1/21 “A major change in the weather pattern is forecast Monday night into Wednesday morning, as a low-pressure system near Baja moves northward along the Central Coast. Since the low is moving out of the south, it will contain subtropical moisture and snow levels will remain above 8,000 feet.

This system will produce increasing southerly winds, cooler temperatures and much-needed rain. At this time, rainfall amounts are expected to range between 0.25 and 0.75 of an inch. Another chance of rain is forecast next Thursday. The unsettled weather pattern will continue through the first week of February.”

Foto Friday – Header photo contest

No photos from me, today, but I want to see yours! Header photo contest starts NOW, I already have one that was sent to me. No prize this time, sorry. I’ll pick a few, then put those to the readers for a vote. Remember the size constraints! Some really great photos don’t look good with that long, narrow format. You have two weeks to submit, until midnight January 23.

New Year’s Eve

After an eventful day yesterday, And a surprise last night in the form of a chimney falling on my head as I was reaching for that elusive sleep, I am just grateful for warmth tonight due to a repaired chimney, and the blessings of friendships I cherish.

I wasn’t going to write today, but a dear friend got the Big “C” notice today, and while I am positive she will lick this easily as it has been caught very early, it simply reminded me to take that retrospective step tonight as I say goodbye to 2014.

I have always been blessed with magnificent family and friends in my life. I never take that for granted any more than I can take this magical place I live for granted. The sounds of laughter and the silence of the mountain tops help me be grateful for this mystery of life. Mine, like yours is special. I have had many lessons to learn this time around, and I am hopeful I have learned them well.

I look forward to tomorrow – and all my future tomorrows – with joy and wonder. I wish you all the same. May Peace and Joy be the rule for you and all of us in 2015.

Pfeiffer State Park partial opening tomorrow, Christmas Eve

Pfeiffer State Park will have a partial reopening December 24. The following areas will be open: Main Camp (campsites 131-189); The Big Sur Lodge Restaurant, Store, and Lodging; Buzzard’s Roost Trail, Pfeiffer Falls/Valley View Teail; and the Picnic Areas near the Day Use parking lots. All other areas will remain closed.

The Pine Ridge Trail between the Big Sur Station and Sykes Hot Springs is closed until further notice. This closure also includes the Pine Ridge parking lot at the Big Sur Station. Heavy rains and large mud slides have created extremely hazardous and impassable conditions. Further segments of the trail are in imminent danger of failure or collapse which could result in serious injury.

Inquire at the Entrance Station for further information. The SP apologizes for any inconvenience.
