Fire crews battle vegetation fire in Prunedale

CalFire confirms crews are trying to put out a half acre fire near Highway 156 and McGuffie Road in Prunedale.

I have been unable to locate anything further. Like I said, Fire Season has started, if it ever ended.

Fire Season starts In March this year

This afternoon, there were two separate abandoned campfire along South Coast Ridge Rd – one at 1/4 mile in, one at 1/2. One at 12:30 pm, another at 3:30 pm. PLEASE be responsible! People, as well as precious wildlife and flora live here. Don’t destroy our home.

at 12:53 this afternoon, I got the followng email:

“Hey Kate…..just heard a dispatch for veg fire at Naciemento River an Bryson/Hisperia…..B3414, Engines 4694, 3482, 3483, 3477, D3442, Ques. crew 5…..got to be a mutual aid to there, that’s in M/C [Monterey County] area.”

“….sort of sounds like it might be back by copperhead, at the back side of Bryson/hysperia….”

“That have D3442 an WT50 staging right now at where ever there location is…….wonder if they’re getting a handle on it.”

And at 1:41 pm – “They just cancelled Ques. 5 an 3477.”

Fortunately, it looks like it was handled rather quickly, but it certainly is a heads-up for this season, and with the large influx of “guests,” this fire season could be a long one. We can only hope and pray, but it sure is early.

South Coast Ridge Rd Repair & Closure

From Duke Krenkle, USFS:
“Hi Kate. I’m trying to contact as many residents as I can in the Prewitt Ridge area and thought you might be able to post some information on your Blog. The Forest Service is planning on completing some road repair work on South Coast Ridge Rd. in april and unfortunately it’s going to require a full closure. I haven’t gotten all the details yet and I’m hopeful we’ll be able to negotiate a time frame for the closure that can accommodate resident’s schedules, possibly one or two weekends. All I know right now is that the contractor will start april 20th and should be completely finished by april 31st. The project is located a half mile in from Nacimiento Summit in a narrow stretch of road.”

As soon as Duke receives further info and forwards it on to me, I will post it here. These posts also go to FB and Twitter, but there are those who live in these mountains who aren’t on line – not many, but a few, so if we can all work to assure that those individuals also are notified, it would be helpful.

Wild Weather

Wow, was today fun, or what? Reports of sudden squalls, lightning, hail, sunshine and rain simultaneously, in various locations throughout Big Sur. I only got .11″ up here today, but more yesterday – sorry, I forgot to write it down, but I remember it was up to .25″ at one point yesterday afternoon.

This was from yesterday.

Oscars Sunday Weather Report, South Coast Version

From my SLO Weathercaster:
An impressive (549-dm) upper-level low pressure system iforecast to move over the Central Coast tonight. This system is currently producing a few scattered rain showers this morning, however, convective showers will become heavier by tonight.

This system will draw cold air from the upper levels of the atmosphere and create an unstable atmosphere with the a possibility of thunderstorms this afternoon through tonight.
These thunderstorms can create gusty winds, hail and periods of heavy rainfall. Total rainfall amounts are expected to range between a quarter and three quarters of an inch.
However, if your location is near a thunderstorm, higher amounts of precipitation could develop.

Today’s maximum temperatures will range from the high 50s to the low 60s. Snow levels are expected to drop to near 4,500 feet in the Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi Mountains with up to nine inches of new snow above 5,000 feet.

Burn Status Number

All, please spread the word.

There are issues with the burn status phone number 800-225-2876. It may be fixed by tomorrow but until they get it fixed you can call their office number, 647-9411, push number 5 for the burn status. Or go online to the web site, at MBUAPCD.org it is really faster….

I had planned on uploading the finalists tonight, for tomorrow’s post. I’m not sure I can. Some of you already know I lost a close friend today. It was sudden. She went to Stanford a week ago. They told her on Sunday the Cancer had rapidly spread beyond their ability to control it. They gave her 1 and 1/2 to two months. They released her Tuesday to her sister and set up Hospice care. She lasted two DAYS. Rose and I were going to see her Sunday.

LISA Sorenson was beloved by our community. We are all in shock and doing what we can to come to deal with this awful news. She was surrounded by family today and passed over just before 2 this afternoon. Her family will have a memorial BBQ for her in Cambria, where she and her sister owned a home, this summer.

Give me a week, and I should be able to get the finalists chosen and up. Thank you for your understanding.

Lisa, we love you and will see you on the other side.

Storm Report & Road Conditions, 2/8/15

4:11 pm – SP got it cleared up. Ed note – this is just the first of the slides we will see before this storm is  done sometime tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully, none of them will be significant or prolonged.

3:45 pm – MUD/ROCK SLIDE AT MM 42, Grimes Canyon.

3:30 pm – a TC of an SUV vs. Guard rail near Post Ranch. There are concerns about power lines as well. May be tie ups for a bit until all can be cleared. Nothing as dramatic as the 8.35″/hr at 11:11 am, but we are up to 1.26″ for the day and 4.15″ for the storm. More is coming in tonight into tomorrow am, so conditions are ripe for road problems. Be careful, and try to stay off Highway One at night, particularly if unfamiliar.

8:15 – traffic hazard at Big Creek, black sedan. I’m guessing flat tire from rocks on the road … Based on past experience, so an educated guess, but still, a guess.

7:30 am – FHL has confirmed the bridge at N-F is indeed open.

6:30 am – the rain started as I was waking. Today is predicted to be a repeat of Friday, but perhaps higher rain totals. Winds are progged to be slightly less, but advisories issued thru 10 pm.

Yesterday, Ft. hunter Liggett closed its water crossings at Nacimiento-Fergusson and at Del Venturi. That is specific to water crossings, not bridges, as written. There is a number to call for further information, but it is too early to call.

Nothing is being reported on the CHP website at this time regarding problems on Highway One. Okay, that the abbreviated early am report … Stay turned for further reports throughout the day. Now time for coffee.
