Cal Trans Convoys

Well, this was enlightening. Cal Trans posted a video on twitter and FB showing the Convoy yesterday. Those trucks with double trailers are coming north over the Pitkin’s Curve Bridge, and then through Paul’s Slide could only have come from Nacimiento, over a bridge rated for only 15 tons and 30′ in length. How much do these fully loaded monsters weigh? And how long are they?? Any truckers or heavy equipment operators want to chime in on this? I sure hope Cal Trans plans on repairing that tiny little bridge and Nacimiento Rd when this is all over, assuming it lasts.

I have been told these trucks are 65′ long and weight 40 tons loaded. I am afraid the representatives of Cal Trans, USFS, MoCo and others are going to get tired of hearing from me, but I feel it is important. I sent them each a copy of this photo and the length and weight of these transfer trucks, as I have been informed.

Rain Reports & Road Conditions, 12/15/16

8:30 pm – the highway closed at 8pm, there was a car on its roof at the Big Sur Station, and now we are under a flood warning:

“FLASH FLOOD WARNING – Soberanes & Chimney Burn Scars
This message is for any of the areas inside/alongside/or down-slope of the Soberanes or Chimney Burn Scars. The National Weather Service has issued a FLASH FLOOD WARNING for your area. A WARNING is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of occurring. A WARNING is used for conditions posing a threat to life or property.”

6:30 PM – it just got serious. 40 mph, 1/3″ an hour. Total so far today, 1.35″

3:3-0 pm – Many rock/mudslides in   Santa Cruz being reported.

2:30 pm – up to .60″ and it is just getting going.

1 pm – here are the graphs, yesterday’s (again) and today’s which is quite higher.

Noon:

Rain: I have received .28″ thus far, steady, but light all morning. Also received .25″ yesterday by dark. Nepenthe is up to .34″ thus far. This is what the automated gauges have recorded as of 11 am:

Roads:  As far as the roads, no big problems being reported, but there are bound to be rocks out on Highway One, so pay attention as you travel, and report what needs reporting.

PAVING OPERATION NEAR CARMEL ALONG HIGHWAY 1 CONTINUES UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY

MONTEREY COUNTY – A maintenance paving operation on less than one mile section of Hwy. 1 from Monastery Beach to Point Lobos near Carmel which began this past Monday, Sept. 29 will continue until next Thursday, Oct. 9, Caltrans officials announced today.

Roadwork consists of one way reversing traffic control with flaggers. Work hours are from 9 am to 3 pm. Motorists can expect delays not to exceed 10 minutes. Paving should be complete by Thursday, Oct. 9.

NOTE: There will be electronic message boards alerting motorists.

This roadwork is being performed by the Caltrans Monterey Maintenance crews as a safety precaution to provide motorists and cyclists a safer route to travel.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.

Rocky Creek Closures this week

Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project: July 22 – July 26

Daytime roadwork on Highway 1 continues next week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 22 through Friday, July 26.

There will be A FULL OVERNIGHT CLOSURE of Hwy. 1 on Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25 from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

No overnight closures will occur on Friday/Saturday nights

Storm Watch, 4/8/09

9:00 am – The Herald is reporting the road expected to open by mid-day. Cal-Trans is predicting one lane open by about 1 pm. Stay tuned for further updates, as they become available. And the photo, when the internet fairies allow.

1-clean-up

8:00 am – I received an additional 1/2 in. overnight, for the storm, 1.25″, for the season, 33.75″

Here is a shot taken by Rene Robles of the parking lot at the Big Sur Lodge late yesterday afternoon. Be patient with me, if it takes a while to get it uploaded. Well, I will get it loaded when I can. In the meantime, there is an article in today’s Herald about last night’s closure. 5:00 am – it continues to rain, heavy at times. While CHP is not reporting the closure, anymore, I cannot imagine that it opened during the night, given conditions. Often times, old incidents will drop off their website. There were unconfirmed reports that one lane was open for a time, last night around 9:30 pm. Will report more, when I know more.
