Weather, 10/6/10
1 pm – There it is. Just before 1 pm, the rain has come. Not drizzle, not wetness, real honest-to-goodness rain. Now the question becomes, how much will we get? Yesterday at 5 pm I only got 1/10th of an inch. This seems more significant based on what I see and hear, as well as what the radar shows. Thunderstorms are still possible this afternoon and this evening.

Jade Festival Weather
5:00 pm – yup, it is here. The first rain of the season. Oh, so nice.
4:15 pm – look at the difference one-half hour can make in the Nexrad.
4:00 pm – in the last 15 mins the band of yellow has pushed its way to just over 1/2 way to the coast from the Salinas Valley. It should be here shortly, boys and girls.
Update, 3:45 pm: Here it comes:
At this point, this is what NOAA says we can expect: “ON THURSDAY THE LOW BEGINS TO TRANSITION OUT OF THE AREA AS A WEAK HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE BUILDS ALONG THE CALIFORNIA COAST. THE RIDGE WILL STRENGTHEN OVER THE WEEKEND RETURNING WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS TO THE REGION. AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO BE AT TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL BY SUNDAY.”
Despite the great prediction, dressing in layers is always a good idea this time of year down here on the South Coast. See you all Friday!
In the meantime, scattered showers possible today and tomorrow, thunderstorms possible on Wednesday afternoon, and those of us in the mountains can expect temperatures down into the 30s by Wednesday.
Weather Report, 10/4/10
4:00 pm – drizzle reported in Big Sur Valley a little before noon. I was on my way to Cambria, where it was sunny, but definitely fall. Coming home, I could see the clouds up against the tops of all the mountains, and I watched the fog come in as I made my way north. Here, at home, now, it is 47 degrees, and dripping from the high fog. It is not rain, but it is wet and cold none-the-less. Above this, I know there are scattered clouds.
I woke up to a chilly 57 degrees, a 40 degree drop since Saturday. I was completely socked in by the clouds. Currently, there are both high and low clouds, and the sun peeks through occasionally. I can not see across to Willow Creek top, at the moment. NOAA is saying there is a chance of shattered showers today, but a stronger possibility of rain in the hills of Southern Monterey county on Tuesday and Wednesday. Hmmm…that’s me. Guess I better get ready.
Jade Festival 2010
The countdown continues. Only 4 more days until the 19th Annual Jade Festival held at the Pacific Valley School. We are busy getting all the last minute details ironed out, making our lists, the vendors are beginning to think about what to pack up, and some may already be packing.
Me? I’m preparing the meal tickets for the volunteers, the vendor maps to be printed up, the sign-in sheets for volunteers for T-shirts, etc. and thinking about what I will need.
Friday the 8th, 12-6; Saturday the 9th, 10-6; Sunday the 10th, 10-5. Join in the fun.
Strange Weather
9 pm – cell over Lake San Antonio
It has been hot and muggy all day. Even now at 8 pm, it is 80 degrees inside, with all the windows open. Lots of good strikes coming down In Paso at the moment, so be careful out there!
6 pm – I have received reports from readers in Paso Robles and in Morro Bay that they have thunder in both areas.
I have been watching the thunder clouds build all afternoon to the South and East of me. First, I will try to get a radar shot posted here, and then, I will go take a shot of the thunder heads.
Give me half an hour for the radar and the photo, and then come back. I’ve got to close everything up, just in case.

How NOT to deliver disturbing news
There is a trend developing in this electronic world, that I would hope people will really take a look at and re-evaluate. It is beyond inappropriate, in my view. This trend is to send out notice of an individual’s sudden and unexpected death through a mass email list.
I just got one from PelicanNetwork, and let the owner know that in my opinion this is in extremely poor taste. I have known about this death for most of the week, but if I hadn’t, this is not how I would want to find out. Think about it. Think of the people who hadn’t known. Is this the way they should find out? This is the kind of news one prefers to get from friends, personally, not through a huge email list, many of whom don’t even know this person.
Two years ago, I was traveling in Peru with a friend. We were out on the Amazon, completely isolated. When we finally returned to civilization, 10 days later, at the hotel in Lima, I checked my email. I had received another sudden, unexpected death notice via a different email list. I could not breathe – literally. My friend and I were both devastated. We spent $200 on international phone calls trying to find out what happened, how, and why. This was the type of news that we would have received from friends upon our return. Instead, we received it in isolation, far from our beloved Big Sur, where we could hold and be held.
Think. Please. Would you want to be notified via a huge impersonal Big Sur email list about the death of someone you had known since he was in Kindergarten?? Maybe I am old school, where manners and civility, particularly in times of tragedy, matter. Maybe being unconscious of the pain one’s actions can cause is the way of the world, but I don’t think so.
2010 Jade Festival Countdown!
The 19th Annual Jade Festival will be in full swing one week from today.
It starts at noon on Friday October 8th and will go until 6 pm that night. Saturday it is held from 10-6 pm, and Sunday is from 10-5 pm. Great music line-up, wonderful food … and, and … THE JADE!!
Plaskett Creek Campground starts filling up by Wednesday, and is usually full by Thursday, but there are also Kirk Creek and Limekiln Campgrounds, as well as lodging at Lucia Lodge, Tree Bones Resort, and Gorda, here on the South Coast.
San Simeon and Cambria are easy drives as is “downtown” Big Sur. So join us for some old-fashioned South Coast hospitality. Many claim they’ve been transported back to the 60’s, if they are old enough to remember them, and others claim it is the way Big Sur really has always been.
Please remember, NO CAMPFIRES outside the developed campgrounds mentioned above. Anywhere else is a no-no, and considering the current extreme fire danger, you can bet that $5,000 fine one of us WILL report any and all campfires!
Speaking of fires, bring the kids to meet Smokey the Bear. He usually puts in an appearance on Saturday. Also there will be lectures and demonstrations about the South Coast gem, as well as good family fun. Remember, this is a family event held on school grounds and drugs or alcohol are not allowed.
The Countdown begins! Oh, my. I have so much to do this next week!! Stop by and say “hi” in the main SCCLT booth right at the entrance by the band stand.
