Good morning,
I want to give an update on trash collection in Big Sur.

Residential and Commercial Dumpsters
This past Friday, May 5 Waste Management sent the commercial truck to collect from residents and businesses. We collected 15 tons of material. WM is on an every other week pick up schedule for residents and businesses. The next pick up day will be Friday, May 19.

40 Yard Dumpsters
The 2-40 yard dumpsters are provided and serviced by Coastal Rolloff. Coastal Rolloff accesses the dumpsters from northbound Hwy 1 from San Luis Obispo. With the newest landslide occurring last week, Coastal was not able to empty the 40 yard Mill Creek dumpster on Friday, May 5. Coastal is only able to service 1-40 yard each Friday due to their driver availability.

The 40 yard dumpsters are located at Mill Creek and Vista Point. Both dumpsters are completely full. The dumpsters are getting abused in the sense that they are being overfilled, litter is left behind, and bulky items are being dropped into the containers. The dumpsters are strictly for the use of residential trash.

This Week
To address the full 40 yard dumpster issue, Waste Management will be taking an empty 25 yard covered dumpster on Wednesday, May 10 through Naci-Fergusson Rd and will be placed next to one of the existing 40 yard dumpsters, where there is room. We will do our best to service the 25 yard roll off container, until Coastal is able to empty the 40 yard dumpsters. Please let me know if you have questions.

This morning, this caravan showed up at the south end of the Bridge undoubtedly to cheers from all who saw. Sander Koning took this photo.

He asked me if they came through Mud Creek. I replied, “No” as I was told it was closed to all. Okay, they REALLY meant it was closed to all but the trucks that were bringing much needed equipment to the south end of the Bridge.They got all this equipment through this am, but when they tried to return, they were turned away. We meet 3 or 4 empty trucks coming up Nasty, while we were negotiating a downward route. When we got to the bottom, we saw more trucks coming north. I told Rock Knocker, maybe they were turned away from Mud Creek. Turns out they were. The turnouts were filled with some very long low boys, trailers, and the like. They had all had to be dropped in order to get the trucks back on the other side via Nasty. They were too long for this windy road. We saw a local in the parking lot of the school who had been watching the parade going south, and then watching the same trucks come north. At least they got the equipment and supplies delivered.

Getting through our slides:

We are now the North Island and the South Island. North is between Paul’s Slide and the bridge. South is between Paul’s Slide and Mud Creek. Just like New Zealand, two distinct islands – also both home to some remarkable Jade.

Town run accomplished. Weed Eater purchased. 250 miles round trip to SLO and 11 1/2 total hours. I am exhausted.

Birthday this month, and happens to be on a Friday. If I can get through at the noon hour, and Paul’s Slide doesn’t get temperamental, I can return during the evening window. Watch out, Nepenthe, I’m coming to celebrate! I really, really need an ambrosia burger, and a drink or two.

STATE ROUTE 1 IS FULLY CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AT MUD CREEK DUE TO CONTIUED SLIDE ACTIVITY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. DELIVERY VEHICLES AND LOCAL RESIDENTS WILL NEED TO USE NACIMIENTO-FERGUSSON EXIT SOUTH OR TO CLEAR THE ACCESS TIMES AT PAUL’S SLIDE.
CALTRANS WILL PROVIDE AN UPDATE MID-DAY ON MONDAY, MAY 8.

At 5:30 am, Cal Trans sent out notice of yet another slide at Mud Creek today, Thursday, 5/4/17. It is closed in both directions, again, Additionally, there is fog on the coast making work difficult. An update will be sent out this afternoon.

My dog, Bear, who ALWAYS hangs out right near the house and is immediately in for dinner when I call him at 6 pm, was missing. I called and called, every 5 mins I called. I went to the door and opened it to see if he was there. He is one who has never scratched or barked or otherwise let me know he wanted in, so I always have to check. At 7, thinking it will be my last check until just before dark, I went to check. No Bear. I close the door. Just as I am beginning to cry, I hear his distinctive whine, as he does when he sees the cats or me, or a friend. I open the door, and there he is. I burst out in tears. I couldn’t stop. I still can’t even though he is home and uninjured. These lives are too short and mean so much.

His mother, Dakota, is still around. She taught him well. He is the main guard dog. When he and his sister were approximately teen-angers, she used to take them on runs – long ones. She taught them the mountain and how to make their way home. Dakota would always be first home, but Bear wasn’t far behind. Miranda, a little overweight, was slower. But they always made it home. After a while, they knew all the paths, all the tricks, and they all stayed home. Tonight, he found his way home again. I am so grateful. But that little bugger is going to have to stay inside for a few days. He took 5 years off my life.
