NORTHERN LIMIT OF HIGHWAY 1 CLOSURE

MOVED NORTH TO PALO COLORADO RD 

MONTEREY / SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES – The north end of the Highway 1 closure has been moved north to Palo Colorado Rd. at Post Mile 61.5 at the request of CHP.

The Highway 1 closure now spans from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to Palo Colorado Rd. in Monterey County.

The gates at Paul’s Slide (PM 22), are closed and will remain closed 24-hours a day.

Travelers from the south will encounter a closure on Highway 1 at the elephant seal viewing area, four miles north of San Simeon. A significant slide, one mile south of Ragged Point, extends over both lanes of travel. As a result, the highway is impassible at this location and is expected to restrict access to Ragged Point from the south for several weeks.

9 am – lots of reports of flooding throughout SLO Co, I cannot keep up with reports that span from Nipomo to Cambria to Templeton. Stay off the roads unless it is an emergency or you are a first responder. And watch out for each other and your neighborhood.

8:30 am Lots of wind and rain last night,. No power when I woke up, so I had to get the gennie going before I coudl check on conditions. The chp website reported 98 incidents for the Monterey area (which includes Santa Cruz, Hollister and Gilroy. Took a while to read all that small print. Today, I think I will just keep this one page open for reports as they come in, thorough out the day. Take a look at Mining Ridge (over 10”) and not an outlier this time as Three Peaks is almost 8” Stay safe and off the roads and watch out for each other. Anderson Canyon has reported over an 1” an hour and now up to 5” by the Knight household, even though Anderson Peak is missing data.

Also Evacuation Warnings for big Sur River, Carmel River, Pajaro River, San Lorenzo…my inbox being inundated with warnings. So please take heed and sign up for official warnings or following the MCSO on social media. Don’t rely on unofficial sources, even me. I do my best, but I could miss one for your area since I am beginning to hyper focus on Big Sur.

I have to add this tonight. From Weather West (Daniel Swain): “At this time, I am more concerned about the potential for widespread and possibly severe flash flooding/debris flows/landslides along the Big Sur coast southward into the Transverse Ranges of SoCal. This is not only where the strong AR is now expected to spend the most time traversing, but may also be the target of some rather intense convective activity given the considerable surface-based instability associated with this storm. In fact, the AR itself may have embedded lightning and locally torrential downpours–especially south of the SF Bay Area–with very high 1-hourly precipitation rates. This is the kind of setup that greatly elevates concern regarding major flash flooding/debris flow risk along both Big Sur coast and Transverse Ranges given their tendency to intercept massive amounts of precipitation over very short periods of time during conditions favoring “training” bands of convectively-enhanced precipitation. In addition, rivers in this area may also flood rather significantly in addition to the flash flood risk within smaller water courses.”

An Evacuation Warning has been issued for low-lying areas of the Big Sur River effective immediately and until further notice due to the incoming storm. If you have large animals or need extra time to evacuate, now is the time to do so.

If you are in an Evacuation Warning Zone prepare to leave. Be ready to leave if an Evacuation Order is issued. Gather essential items now to be ready to go. If you feel unsafe, do not wait for an evacuation order, leave immediately. Check with your neighbors to ensure they have been made aware of this alert.

 CLOSURE OF HIGHWAY 1 REMAINS IN PLACE 

MONTEREY / SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES – The closure of Highway 1 from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County, to just south of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn in Monterey County remains in place.

Caltrans maintenance crews have responded today to multiple smaller slides inside and just north of the closure area. Some locations remain active, and crews are continuing to clear the roadway. Maintenance crews will continue daytime patrols throughout the closure area.

The gates at Paul’s Slide (PM 22), are closed and will remain closed 24-hours a day.

Caltrans will continue to take advantage of any break in inclement weather to assess road conditions and provide access as long as the conditions are favorable for public travel. We anticipate that an opportunity to reopen this closure may occur sometime in the middle of this week.
