Local School Board seeks community input

To The Pacific Valley School Community:

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members,

The BSUSD board of Trustees are requesting your input on a matter that has been brought to the board and will be voted on in the near future, either at a open public special meeting or the next regularly scheduled open public meeting on May 26 at 6:30 pm

Luvlab Productions, a private locally owned business whose partners include Mike and Lucas Handy, has asked to use the PV school campus for parking for up to 150 cars for their Big Surreal Event up Willow Creek, scheduled for June 26,27,28  2015. The campus would be used for parking  for three days. LuvLabs has offered to compensate Pacifc Valley School. Safety and legal issues are being considered on both sides.

As representatives of the community, the board welcomes your feedback. Please reply to this email address onlybsusdboard@gmail.com. All input and  information submitted will be presented at the next meeting for review.

There will be no response to your email. However, the board encourages you to come to the next meeting or call Gordon if you would like more information and/or details.

Thank you for your participation.
Sincerely,
The BSUSD Board of Trustees

Public Comment re Solar Power at PV STation

The USFS has sent out a letter requesting public comment by May 30th regarding the installation of a solar array system to become the primary source of power for the main firefighting station on the South Coast of Big Sur. The existing diesel generating system will be used for back-up power only. It will cover an area of approximately 15,00 sq ft and the total height of the panels will be 7 ft. None of this will be visible from the highway. This is a HUGE step, and I heartily support it, and will let the USFS know that. Of our 5 largest visitor-serving facilities down here (Gorda, Treebones, PV Station, the Hermitage, and Lucia) 2 of them will now be primarily solar powered, Lucia having been the first to take this major step. Both are setting good examples for the rest of us (I have been completely solar for over two years. I run my genie for 2-3 hours maybe 4-5 times a year in the shortest days of the year. BIG savings in gas and emissions.)

I would urge all interested parties to support this endeavor. Email to comments-pacificsouthwest-los-padres-monterey@fs.fed.us in either email, plain text (.txt) rich text (.rtf) or word (.doc). For oral comments or further information, call Jeff Kwasny, Resource Officer, at 831-667-1126. Was reported to me as at Coast Gallery, and only 10×10′ spot. Now how did that get started? I’ve been in town south, so a tad slow on this, but windy as heck up here at Peidras Blancas.

Big Sur Fashion Show canceled for this year

Dear Fashion Friends and Fans,

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting our 2015 date and the anticipated
call for designers announcement. Your fearless and dedicated team of BBBIS (Big
Big
Big Sur Fashion Show) have been working diligently through the fall and
winter as we’ve been called to face new challenges for the show. Namely, the
challenge of a venue. While Henry Miller Library remains our fiscal sponsor and
most dedicated partner, our show has outgrown their beautiful space and we have
been doing a great deal of research for another Big Sur location where we can
safety and excitedly host the 800+ audience members, volunteers, sponsors and
participants that make up this amazing event.

After months of research without a clear solution emerging, we just made the
difficult committee decision that it is time for us to take a one year hiatus so
we can adequately to secure and plan for our new venue. After six years we are
taking a leap year!

We know this will be a disappointment to many of you, as it is to us. We didn’t
make the decision lightly, and it’s an incredible testament to you that we
simply can’t responsibly host this event anywhere with less than an 800 person
capacity. (After all, our tickets last year sold out in 7 seconds!) But we are
sooooooo pumped to take this amazing event to the next level in 2016, and our
Bohemian Recipes/ Flower Power themes will be waiting for us next spring.

We are prepared to move the show to Carmel or Monterey if the perfect Big Sur
spot is not revealed in 2016, although Big Sur is unquestionably our mission #1!
We very much welcome your ideas and input if you know of a public or private
property in Big Sur that can accommodate those numbers, with alcohol sales and
parking.

In lieu of the full affair this year, we are hosting a short series of catered
dinner theater evenings this spring at Henry Miller with inaugural screenings of
Lynette Tolentino’s full-length documentary about the big Big BIG Sur Fashion
Show, Ashes to Art. We are also still planning to host the Kid’s Fashion Show
costume workshops and runway event. Stay tuned for details!

We love you and are so grateful for your flexibility and patience as we leap to
new heights in 2016!

Ever yours,

The BBBIS
Gaia Cascio, Lisa Goettel, Michelle Magdalena Maddox, Kendra Morgenrath, Katie
Newman, Jaime Oksas, Ashleigh Poland, Elsa Rivera, Rachael Short, Lynette

Happy Halloween, BSMAAC, and weather

The BSMAAC meeting is this Friday, Halloween. On the Agenda is the introduction of the new USFS Los Padres Supervisor, Cal Trans project updates, Presentation to Big Sur Lodge, and presentation by B-Sage, as well as reports by member agencies.

Also, rain is on tap to start by Halloween morn. Most welcome, of course.

Finally, from my friend Dan Danborn:

And don’t forget Nepenthe’s Bal Masque which benefits our very own Big Sur Volunteer Fire Department. See Nepenthe .com for tickets!

Jade Festival Photos

What a weekend! I was too busy to get any but a couple of shots, but I have collected a few from others I wish to share. There were several world famous musicians who played.

I have a few more I will be adding throughout the day, but I must first add a thank you to the core members of the SCCLT who do the vast majority of the work in setting this up: Syd Carr for the incredible music and volunteers; Kirk Brock who brings the diverse array of vendors to us each year; Steve Finch, who was in charge of almost everything else; and Lisa Gehring who controls all the money. The school and PTO had a number of booths, not the least of which was the BBQ booth, led by Gordon Pfiffero and Josh Wilson. It was the best! And for one of the most important, and least recognized jobs of all – trash and recycling, Gail Dinsmore. To all who contributed in all ways great and small – we keep getting better each year due to the hard work you all contribute to this community event.

More photos later.
