July 4th

Remember, absolutely NOOO fireworks in Big Sur – anywhere, even on the beach. There is a $1000.00 fine. The feds, if you are on federal property can fine you between $500 and $50,000.
Otherwise, enjoy your 4th.

The amazing thing about this second photograph is the narrow depth of field, as evidenced by the wing tips, and yet how focused is the eye. Great job, Dan! Thank you!

Remembering Terrydactyl

This from James McFarland:

Terry left instructions that in the event of his death that he was to be cremated. He requested that his long time friend and fellow paraglider pilot, Honza Rejmanek, scatter his ashes. Honza has a very busy schedule, but he is available to come to Big Sur the weekend of JULY 14th-15th. So that’s that.

The distribution of Terry’s ashes will be timed depending on the weather. Saturday afternoon [the 15th] has been penciled in. A memorial is scheduled for Saturday evening just after dark, with a possible group dinner held just before. The timing is to allow for folks who live out of the area to arrive and depart on the same day.

Plan on a potluck and B.Y.O.x. (bring your own whatever) scenario, with the possibility of a group area set up for a shared meal.

A memorial blog has been created in Terry’s name for those wishing to post stories and/or photos:

For locals, we will start the party at Sand Dollar, the usual time (big sur time) – organic, spontaneous, bring what you can, come when you can, and we will share food, drumming, laughter and song and bid goodbye to Terry, as well as Jeffe, whom we haven’t sent off, yet. Both of them would want us to P-A-R-T-Y in their honor, and some of us old farts want to be home before dark! (Me and Rock Knocker and several other locals, I know of.)

Dan knows I have been struggling for a couple weeks with some abscessed teeth, so when the Internet doesn’t cooperate, it is easy to just give up. Big Sur Kate’s favorite photographer, Dan Danbom, sent me a couple of great shots from Pheiffer Beach to share. When life and the persnickety Internet cooperates, I have some stories and/or photos to share. In the meantime, while the antibiotics kick in, again, enjoy these two.

BTW, I’ve finally learned how to edit AND post photos from my iPad. 😉

Memorial Day weekend, and I MUST have a fire.

Memorial Day weekend has begun. It is traditionally the start of our summer, but Mother Nature has her way with us once again. I am very glad that life got in the way of my planting my tomatoes.

Here it is only 6 pm, and it is only 40 degrees outside … Given that the sun is not even down, yet, freezing temps are possible tonight. Right now, I have built a fire in the wood stove, and am working on building it up to a rip-roaring one tonight. Tomatoes would not fare well tonight, and given the high winds, would have been dead come morning…so maybe next weekend? I guess I better concentrate on Early Girls this year!

Big Fat Moon, Cinco de Mayo, and Sam Farr…not necessarily in that order

What a glorious afternoon and evening!

Rock Knocker and I spent a few hours this afternoon at the wonderful home of Kenny and Mary Wright for Cinco de Mayo and a fund raiser for Sam Farr. Sam has a heartfelt connection to this coast, having been raised here, and it is evident whenever I see him here. His face lights up and he is clearly at peace.

He showed up in his truck with some small white PVC pipe. “Going to Point 16 from here?” I asked. “Yes,” he said. “I need to work in my garden to stay sane,” he answered. When I left, I congratulated him for keeping his balance with Mother Nature, considering the Washington politics he has to deal with.

Besides seeing Sam, and other wonderful people, like Helen Morganwrath, who came to Big Sur when I was 2 days old – which was a l-o-n-g time ago, and the Wright house, the other highlight of the afternoon was seeing Michael Jones, of Cachauga Store (i tried to inset a link, but was not successful, so see the links to the right, under odds ‘n ends) whom I consider a friend, even though we had never met before. We met on line during the Basin Fire, and I have followed his adventures (and misadventures) ever since. He and his crew catered the event, and oh, my what a treat THAT was! He is a gastronomical artiste. There is just no other way to describe him, unless one is describing his intellect or wit … Then lots of other adjectives come to mind. I love you, Michael, more than my solar panels, or almost, at least.

HipNic was also going on, and considering the HUGE numbers of cars parked at Fernwood and on the highway, this Fourth version seemed to be an amazing event. Maybe next year I will be so retired that I can attend some of those magical 3 days. I’d like that. Anneleise Agren of Coast Road ( also listed in my links under Odds ‘n Ends) offered me her second ticket, but with the solar system yesterday, the gathering at the Wright’s today, and a brief due Monday that I have to write tomorrow, there just wasn’t enough of me to go around! That’s why next year I will try to make it a priority.

Then, to top off the day, I climbed my mountain under the fatest moon of the year! Now, you tell me. Does it get any better than this?
