Arts & Crafts Fair and Small Business Saturday

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday! Support your local community and shop small, preferably here in Big Sur!

So many wonderful ways to support the local Big Sur economy, small businesses, artisans., and non-profits by shopping locally, stopping by the Annual Arts & Crafts Fair at The Grange for one-of-a-kind items and if down on the South Coast, stop by The Hermitage and shop at their lovely gift shop. Our community is teeming with great small businesses that offer wonderful opportunities to start your Holiday shopping adventures.

The History of Small Business in America

(From the U.S. Department of State)

“Americans have always believed they live in a land of opportunity, where anybody who has a good idea, determination, and a willingness to work hard can start a business and prosper. In practice, this belief in entrepreneurship has taken many forms, from the self-employed individual to the global conglomerate.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the public extolled the pioneer who overcame great hardships to carve a home and a way of life out of the wilderness. In 19th-century America, as small agricultural enterprises rapidly spread across the vast expanse of the American frontier, the homesteading farmer embodied many of the ideals of the economic individualist. But as the nation’s population grew and cities assumed increased economic importance, the dream of being in business for oneself evolved to include small merchants, independent craftsmen, and self-reliant professionals.

Today, the American economy boasts a wide array of enterprises, ranging from one-person sole proprietorships to some of the world’s largest corporations. In 1995, there were 16.4 million non-farm, sole proprietorships, 1.6 million partnerships, and 4.5 million corporations in the United States — a total of 22.5 million independent enterprises.”

Weather, road repair, and photos

First, could the weather be any more beautiful? But watch for a major change. According to several reports, I could have a sprinkling of snow by Friday morning – so time to stock my wood box, while the weather is so wonderful.

“The rain won’t be widespread, with most of the shower activity developing along the coastal mountains where snow levels will drop to 2,500 feet by Friday morning. Modest accumulations
of snow (2- and 4-inches) are possible Friday across the Sierra foothills with a dusting also possible in the coastal mountains of the Central Coast.”

And this is the view that greeted me at the bottom of my road

Then I got to Alder Creek … You know the place, where that major slide happened? Was that just last year? Anyway, Cal Trans has put netting up along the whole slide, but was working it again. I stopped and took these two photos … Note the draping, the rock-catching drapery walls, and the two climbers in the bright yellow on the left.

Further down the road, the new chip sealing between the lighthouse and elephant seal beach was tying up traffic for 15-20 minutes. At least there was cell phone signal, so I could check email, surf (which I had not been able to do since Sat am at home) and all I had missed for a day and a half, so the time went by pretty fast.

Halloween kids parade

Also Pacific Valley School has their parade tomorrow last period, which is between 3 and 3:50. Both will offer great photo ops. Love seeing the kiddos in their costumes!

Jade Festival count down, accident, fire, and other updates

First, the count down for the Jade Festival is here – 4 days. Kirk Creek campground was full this am, as well as this pm. There are still spaces available at Plaskett Creek.

There was a motorcycle accident at the Little Sur that closed down the highway for about 3/4 of an hour.

There was a wildfire down near Hearst Castle that was contained within 1/2 hour.

Finally, there is another community meeting about the Viaduct on Wed at the Big Sur Lodge at 10 am. Not much in terms of new info.

“Hi Everyone,

I’ve scheduled a public informational meeting for this Wednesday, October
3, at 10:00 AM at the Big Sur Lodge to discuss the construction of the
Rocky Creek Viaduct. The meeting format will be similar to the September
14 meeting in that we will give a brief summary of the project features and
then take questions.

There will not be a lot of new information but there will some. This
meeting is really intended for those who were not able to participate in
the last one.

Hope to see you all there!

Sincerely,

Ken Dostalek

Life on the coast is never boring.

Jackson Stock at the River Inn

Kate asked me to share the enjoyment of Jackson Stock’s jazz at the River Inn today on the river and the memories of all the Sundays past of Jake Stock and the Abalone Stompers, his dad, brought us. Thanks, from Kate’s new humble helper, bigsurdeb.

The Magic of Fall Equinox

I may not have gotten shots of Endeavor, or the Thunderbirds, but Big Sur held still long enough for me to get a few shots yesterday.

Views like these just added to an already perfect day.

Endeavor, Thunderbirds, Fall Equinox

What an incredible day! I drove up the coast, stopping at every turn out from 9:45-11:00, chasing the endeavor. I didn’t see it, but I realized later, it passed directly over my house! That’s magic, whether I saw it or not.

I had an appointment in Salinas. When I got there, I found out that the Thunderbirds were practicing for their weekend air show. I had at least a dozen near-misses with other cars and pedestrians, as I pulled over suddenly on streets in Salinas, trying to get the shot. I didn’t. But not because I didn’t try … And almost run up the sidewalk on a pedestrian on Sherwood – the old red-light district, and current homeless section.

These planes travel at speeds over 400 mph, sometimes only 2 and 1/2 feet, yes FEET, apart. These Falcon F-16s sometimes reach 7 Gs. For the first time, there is a Mom on the team. She flew fighter planes in Iraq. She wanted to be a fighter pilot at the age of 13, when she first saw the Thunderbirds. Now she is one!

Then, top it off with the Fall Equinox, and official start of fall, and it was one of those days that make me so grateful to be who and where I am. Time to add water to my solar generator – 4 times a year … So equinoxes and solstices are obvious solution. This is the subject of a future blog post. I hope your days are full of magic, too!

The South Coast, the wild coast, NOT Lonely

What a great time we had … Celebrating life, beauty, and this incredible place where we live. It doesn’t get any better than this … Drumming, flute, music, ocean, creek, and great friends … Oh, and wonderful food!

The music ..

And, of course, the Jade!

And Guy’s famous BBQ

20120915-202651.jpg

We will let you know when we have another, but it could be a while, as we are now focused on the Jade Festival coming up next month. We would love our north coast brethren and Cambria partners to join us!

No one died party

For the last year or so, there hasn’t been a South Coast for-no-reason party. There always seem to be get togethers to celebrate the life of one of our members who has gone on to the next adventure, and there have been a lot lately. Now, Guy decided we needed a “no one died” party. So, that is what we are doing … This Saturday – BYOB, a dish to share, DRUMS (please?) and join us for the afternoon. Write me at kwnovoa@mac.com, or call me at 831-818-8026 if you haven’t gotten the word thru the grapevine and need or want additional information.

Shall we celebrate the lives of those of us who are still here? And another summer successfully concluded? I’m ready!

Celebration of life

Remember, we will celebrate the lives of our friends, Terrydactyl, Jefe, and Howie, this Saturday, the 14th at Sand Dollar Picnic area. Guy will start BBQing around noon, and serve when it is ready. Bring some or all of the following: snacks, a dish to share, drinks, music, stories, laughter, flowers, photos, or whatever you feel you can share. Guy, Ralph, and I will provide the meat. We will bring some beer and wine. Penny is bringing the chicken, snacks, and paper goods. Hope to see many of my rarely seen neighbors and friends on Saturday. One campsite has been reserved as a sort of mini group site for those who come from afar.
