Just completed a rescue of an individual over the side of a cliff in the Bixby Bridge area. The rescue took several hours.

Man and Woman stabbed last night in Big Sur
2:30 pm update – from a blog reader and a friend and fellow south coaster …
“I talked to Kenny Harlan @ Lucia last night on my way home from town when I saw 3 sheriff cars in his lot and had already passed LPNF engine, BSVFB engine and another vehicle at Packard beach turnout, just north of Lopez Point. He gave me some info and then I saw sheriff cars at the Willow Vista View and they were talking to campers in the lot who heard the altercation that happened at Willow Crk Beach. At that point they didn’t have the guy but they were going to go looking after getting as much info from the campers. The info they had was that a van came down from Monterey with a few people in it and they were at the beach. After some time the altercation broke out and I thought he said 2 people were stabbed, with the female driving to Lucia (who was also stabbed) to report it.”
And, as I’ve said, word is he was caught.
2:00 pm – word on the South Coast is that a suspect has been caught. Further details as they become available.
10:00 am – According to KION, the stabbings occurred approximately 9 pm last night, Oct. 3, about 5 miles from Lucia Lodge. Both victims were airlifted out due to the remoteness of the incident. There is no suspect, yet. No motive was given, and the exact location is also not provided. Others may have more information. If I find out anything additional, I will add it to this post.
Yet ANOTHER Bike Event on Highway One thru Big Sur
Another bicycle group on the highway. As the stress in the urban areas increases from population increases, we can expect a reciprocal stress on our lovely strip of coast between TWO large urban areas!
Ride 2 Recovery (R2R) is a non-profit organization that helps improve the health and wellness of injured veterans by providing rehabilitation through cycling. We organize out-door non-competitive cycling events to enable injured veterans the ability to rehabilitate, both physically and mentally, from the agonies of war. Some of our combat wounded veterans have specialized bikes made for them to deal with their particular injury (many are amputees). The continued support from the schools not only keep our riders motivated on the challenge, it is also a great boost of morale to have the support of the students cheering them on as they make their journey to recovering.
We are currently planning and wrapping up this year’s California Challenge for 180 active and inactive military personnel October 5 – 11, 2014.
CALIFORNIA CHALLENGE
OCT. 5TH PALO ALTO TO GILROY
OCT. 6TH GILROY TO CARMEL
OCT. 7TH CARMEL TO SAN SIMEON
OCT. 8TH SAN SIMEON TO PISMO BEACH
OCT. 9TH PISMO BEACH TO SOLVANG
OCT. 10TH SOLVANG TO VENTURA
OCT. 11TH VENTURA TO SANTA MONICA
We want to notify you of our presence and see if you and the students of PACIFIC VALLEY SCHOOL would be interested in supporting our troops as they ride by on
Tuesday, October 07 at approximately 12:22pm. Other schools along the route in the past usually have the students make signs, wear red white and blue, and hold American Flags to show their support as the riders pass by the school.
We have 5 challenges a year throughout the US. Let’s put California on the map as the state with the most school support.
The veterans are looking forward to seeing the students out cheering them on.

Hmmm… WP crashes every time I try to upload AFRICA. I’ll try later today.😉
I’ve been trying two different types of methods. No luck. Hoping for a WP update to fix this problem, so sending crash reports each and every time!
Photography Permits in the National Forests
On 25 September 2014, a new rule proposed by the U.S. Forest Service pertaining to photography and film permits sparked internet outrage. According to circulating posts about the issue, the agency would like to charge fees of up to $1,500 before allowing “commercial filming and photography in federally designated wilderness areas.” When the proposal is finalized in November 2014, commercial photographers who do not obtain permits could face fines of up to $1,000. (Tourists and park visitors snapping photographs for personal, non-commercial use would not be affected by the proposed regulations.)
Liz Close, acting director of the U.S. Forest Service, said that the tightened restrictions have been informally practiced for the past four years. Close indicates that they fall under the auspices of the larger Wilderness Act of 1964, and that the agency aims to protect the country’s forests from commercial exploitation:
Under the rules, permit applications would be evaluated based on several criteria, including whether it spreads information about the enjoyment or use of wilderness or its ecological, geological, scientific, educational, scenic or historical values; helps preserve the wilderness character; and doesn’t advertise products or services. Officials also would consider whether other suitable film sites are available outside the wilderness.
Advocates for the First Amendment, however, objected on the grounds that such fines and permit requirements would infringe upon specific constitutional protections concerning free speech. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said that new media outlets and independent journalists would be disproportionately impacted by the proposed fines:
The Forest Service needs to rethink any policy that subjects noncommercial photographs and recordings to a burdensome permitting process for something as simple as taking a picture with a cell phone … Especially where reporters and bloggers are concerned, this policy raises troubling questions about inappropriate government limits on activity clearly protected by First Amendment rights.
Legal defense director for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Gregg Leslie, said that the U.S. Forest Service restrictions constituted a clear violation of the First Amendment. Leslie does not believe the move is legally justified:
It’s pretty clearly unconstitutional … They would have to show an important need to justify these limits, and they just can’t.
After the announcement of the proposal caused controversy among media representatives, the head of the U.S. Forest Service hastened to state that the rule would not be applied to reporters and news organizations:
Faced with increasing criticism of a proposal that would restrict media filming in wilderness areas, the head of the U.S. Forest Service said that the rule is not intended to apply to news-gathering activities.
The rule would apply to commercial filming, like a movie production, but reporters and news organizations would not need to get a permit to shoot video or photographs in the nation’s wilderness areas, Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said.
The USFS is currently accepting comments on the issue here. The period of public comment will be open until 3 November 2014.

Upcoming rain predictions
THE MODELS HAVE TRENDED SLOWER IN MOVING THE COLD FRONTAL RAIN BAND THROUGH OUR AREA AROUND MIDWEEK AND THIS SEEMS REASONABLE GIVEN THAT THE TROUGH WILL BE DEEPENING AS IT APPROACHES THE COAST. IT NOW LOOKS LIKE RAIN WILL BEGIN IN THE NORTH BAY ON WEDNESDAY BUT NOT MAKE IT SOUTH AND EAST THROUGH THE REST OF THE SF BAY AREA UNTIL LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT OR EVEN THURSDAY MORNING. HAVE ADJUSTED THE POP GRIDS ACCORDINGLY. THE SOUTHERN EXTENT OF THE FRONTAL RAIN BAND IS EXPECTED TO REACH TO ABOUT THE MONTEREY PENINSULA ON THURSDAY MORNING. THEREAFTER…THE GFS AND ECMWF AGREE QUITE WELL IN PRODUCING ONLY ISOLATED LIGHT SHOWERS AS THE UPPER TROUGH MOVES THROUGH FROM LATE THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING. THE GEM MODEL…ON THE OTHER HAND…INDICATES MUCH MORE MOISTURE
WITH THE TROUGH AND THIS MODEL SPREADS ANOTHER ROUND OF WIDESPREAD RAIN ACROSS OUR AREA ON FRIDAY AND FRIDAY EVENING. HAVE KEPT RAIN CHANCES GOING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT…BUT CONFIDENCE IN THE FORECAST DECREASES CONSIDERABLY AFTER THURSDAY EVENING GIVEN MODEL DIFFERENCES. THERE IS CURRENTLY NO EXPECTATION FOR THUNDERSTORMS WITH THIS SYSTEM…BUT THIS WILL NEED TO BE LOOKED AT MORE CLOSELY AS WE DRAW NEARER TO THE PRECIP EVENT.
RAINFALL TOTALS WITH THIS SYSTEM LOOK TO BE MOSTLY AROUND A
QUARTER OF AN INCH OR LESS EXCEPT UP TO A HALF INCH OR MORE IN THE COASTAL MOUNTAINS…ESPECIALLY IN THE NORTH BAY. THESE TOTALS ARE BASED ON THE GFS AND ECMWF GUIDANCE AND HIGHER AMOUNTS WOULD OCCUR IF THE 00Z GEM SCENARIO WERE TO VERIFY.

Tribute to Honey Jack
I don’t like doing death announcements on my blog, but by now, most people know that Honey Jack (Koch) left us on Tuesday, the 16th. He went off the road going up to Pfeiffer Ridge.
I did not know Jack, other than seeing him around. But after his passing, I wish I had. Everyone I have spoken with has told me what a valuable, sweet, open hearted member of the community he was. I heard story after story about his contributions to his landlords, neighbors, and friends. Most of Big Sur Valley has benefitted by his presence in our midst, and he will be greatly missed by the community that loved him.

Blessings on your journey, Jack. May you reunite with friends and loved ones.
More Rain?

Foto Friday, 9/19
Thank goodness it is Friday, as this week has been a week of words. Things that need to be written or reported. I am glad I created this respite from the words .. A visual world where words are not needed.
These first two of Big Sur were taken yesterday, during our first rain.

Then, here’s Africa!

Rain Tonight?
From NOAA this afternoon:
“AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA
200 PM PDT WED SEP 17 2014
.SYNOPSIS…AN UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM WILL BEGIN TO IMPACT THE REGION TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT RESULTING IN AN INCREASED CHANCE FOR RAIN SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS. TEMPERATURES WILL ALSO COOL TO BELOW SEASONAL AVERAGES THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE WORKWEEK. DRY CONDITIONS RETURN AND TEMPERATURES REBOUND FOR THE UPCOMING WEEKEND AS A RESULT OF BUILDING HIGH PRESSURE.
.DISCUSSION…AS OF 01:58 PM PDT WEDNESDAY…GENERALLY CLEAR SKIES
PREVAIL ACROSS THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON WITH THE LEADING EDGE OF THE MID/UPPER LEVEL TROUGH MOVING INTO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
OVERNIGHT…THE MID/UPPER LEVEL JET AND ASSOCIATED LOW WILL MOVE INLAND AND SHIFT SOUTHEASTWARD SLIGHTLY. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR PRECIPITATION TO SPREAD DOWN INTO THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS AND
OVER COASTAL LOCATIONS OF MONTEREY COUNTY. RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL BE GREATEST ACROSS THE WEST FACING COASTAL HILLS/MOUNTAINS WHERE ISOLATED LOCATIONS COULD PICK A FEW TENTHS OF AN INCH. MEANWHILE…INLAND VALLEY LOCATIONS MAY RECEIVE ONLY TRACE AMOUNTS OR NO PRECIPITATION AT ALL OVERNIGHT. CHANCES FOR SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY TOMORROW AFTERNOON ACROSS THE NORTH BAY AS A RESULT OF INCREASED MOISTURE AND THE UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM MOVING ACROSS. WILL ALSO CARRY A SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE NORTH BAY AND EAST BAY HILLS/MOUNTAINS AGAIN TOMORROW AFTERNOON. COOLER TEMPERATURES ALOFT WILL ALSO RESULT IN A COOLING TREND THROUGH LATE WEEK.”
“The Sky was as clear as a window one morning. It was so the next morning, and the next, and on every morning that followed until it was hard to remember how rain felt, or how a field looked, green, and moist with life so that a naked foot sank into it. All the things that grew paused in their growing, leaves curled, and each creature turned his back on the sun.” (Beryl Markham, West with the Night.)
NOAA is now predicting 07/100ths of an inch of rain all the way down to Big Sur Wednesday night into Thursday. I covered my cement, just in case. It won’t ease our drought, but at least we might remember how rain felt.
(Barbara, I really will get this lovely book back to you soon.)
