Storm Watch, 2/23

11:00 am – Rain seems to have stopped. Received an additional .50 inches, for a season total of 27.5 inches. CHP reports no road problems in Big Sur, but a friend, who drove north from the Deli reports that there are many standing water puddles which will cause one to hydroplane, if one is not careful.

8:00 am – It has continued to rain most of the night. I received .75 since last report for a season total of 27 inches. CHP website is reporting no problems on Highway One in Big Sur at this time.

In Memory of Dakota

This is the photo I so love of her. I had lost it on my computer, but fortunately, I had previously posted this to my blog, and was able to download it, and recover it for my files. She was such a beautiful dog, and such a great companion for six years.

dakota-at-sunsetAnd from my friend, Sandy Krenkel who sent me this yesterday:

For Dakota

Into our lives they come

Bounding with joy & love

Their spirits creep into our souls

They are a gift from above

They don’t come

With any guarantees

They do bring un-conditional

Acceptance that’s totally free

Some bring us confidence

And help our self-esteem

Others are sent to teach us

A specific lesson it seems

Their eyes made us feel special

Their wagging tails made us smile

Yes, they brought great joy

If, only for awhile

We risk it all

When we love so deep

But with no risk

No memories to keep.

Storm Watch, 2/22

9:30 pm – continuous rain for the past two hours. Life goes on, even when death steps into our path.

7:45 pm – the rain started up again and it is of about the usual intensity, not too heavy, but definitely not light.

1:30 pm – Another 1/4 inch today, but the rain stopped some time ago. The wind has been quite significant all day. I’m sorry I haven’t been keeping up with my weather reports. I lost my favorite dog yesterday to a mountain lion. Dakota was very special.

8:00 am – .5 inches for the storm, thus far, 26.0 inches for the season. Wind is significant. No problems on the road in Big Sur currently being reported on CHP website.

NOAA forecast discussion this morning:

THE BURN AREAS SHOULD REMAIN TO THE SOUTH OF THE HEAVIEST
RAINFALL. HOWEVER...WITH SUCH A MOIST AIRMASS STREAMING
INLAND AND WITH THE MODELS STRUGGLING WITH THE SPECIFICS
OF THIS COMPLEX SYSTEM...WILL NEED TO BE WARY OF ANY
SUDDEN UPSWING IN RAIN RATES IN THE BURN AREAS...OR ANYWHERE
ELSE FOR THAT MATTER.

3:30 am – rain on and off all night, and so far this morning. I’ll post storm and season totals when it is light enough to see them. Some wind, but not too bad.

Storm Watch, 2/21

5:30 pm – the rain started.

7:00 am – Good morning. As all in the area can report, we have the cloud cover of the next storm overhead. NOAA forecast discussion is putting the heaviest rainfall north of SF, fortunately, but of course, we’ll still have to keep an eye on this one, as it develops. Here is the good news:

THE GOOD NEWS FOR THE BURN AREAS OF SANTA CRUZ AND MONTEREY COUNTIES
IS THAT THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN NORTH OF THOSE
AREAS. EVEN SO...WILL NEED TO BE WARY OF ANY INDICATION THAT HEAVIER
RAIN MAY END UP DEVELOPING FARTHER SOUTH THAN WHAT THE MODELS
CURRENTLY INDICATE.

Snow at Sunset

Snow at Sunset, originally uploaded by wind_dancer.

This was last night’s sunset. I love the colors and light at sunset. Snow was still at the top of Cone and Twin Peaks. Amazing after several days of sunshine.

I am trying to upload  a photo of the ducks on the Big Sur River taken by a friend, who apologized for the quality. It’s still cute!  Had some trouble uploading photos last night, and again this morning. Will insert when I can.

I guess a new storm blowing in Saturday night through Monday. Haven’t been keeping close track. I have checked out the forecast discussion, and this one will bring in some sub-tropical rain, as well, so it bears watching.

This from NOAA’s Hazardous Weather Outlook:

A STORM SYSTEM WILL SPREAD RAIN THROUGH OUR AREA STARTING SATURDAY
AFTERNOON IN THE NORTH BAY. ALTHOUGH THERE IS STILL SOME DISAGREEMENT
BETWEEN THE VARIOUS COMPUTER MODELS...THERE IS GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT
WE WILL RECEIVE SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION FROM THIS SYSTEM. RAINFALL
TOTALS UP TO 1.5 INCHES ARE EXPECTED IN LOWER ELEVATION AREAS BY
MONDAY NIGHT WITH 2 TO 4 INCHES IN THE COASTAL HILLS.
And this from the Special Weather Statement:
...SIGNIFICANT RAIN TO RETURN SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY...

...PERSONS NEAR FLOOD PRONE AREAS AND THE BURN AREAS SHOULD START
TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS...

Budget passed, now off to the Governor

The Sacramento Bee is reporting the budget passed both houses this morning. Abel Maldanado agreed to vote for it in exchange for no salary increases for legislators during deficit years; no pay for legislators until a budget is passed; and open primaries. Two out of three I’m just loving. I reserve judgment on the open primaries.

Two of the three proposals made it through. More willing to agree to an open primary system than were wiling to receive no pay if there was no budget. Figures. It is okay for me, and 100’s of thousands of independent contractors to not get paid when there is no budget, but the people responsible — the legislators, THEY will continue to get paid any time they cannot agree on a budget. I am very glad the state will finally pay me the money they owe me for work already performed, and expenses fronted, but I cannot tell you how disgusted at them I am for making sure THEY get paid, when so many others do not.

Gorgeous snow on top of Cone Peak for the second day in a row. I’ll try to get a photo and post this evening, but now that the state is paying me, I have to work for a living! Debbie also send a cute photo of ducks playing in the Big Sur River today. I’ll try to get that up, as well.

BTW, the rain total up here for Monday and Tuesday was 1.75 inches. Don’t have the daily breakdown.

Storm Watch, 2/18

Nothing to report, other than rain totals, which I’ll get to shortly. Looks like I’ll see the sunrise in a few minutes, for a change, and have a nice quiet day for working.

Big Sur weathered these series of storms well, and came out of them in remarkable shape, due in no small part to the planning and preparations of Cal-Trans. We all owe them a debt of gratitude. Remarkable work, everyone!

Storm Watch, 2/17

9:45 pm = raining again, or still, not sure as I’ve had to deal with some family issues. Life likes to throw more than one fruit in one’s basket, no?

6:45 pm – Rain pretty much continuous for the past 40 minutes, although what I would consider “normal” not too heavy, and not light. Let’s hope this is the last of it until the weekend. We need a drying out period.

6:05 pm – another cloud burst with lots of rain. Sorry, I got side-tracked and forgot to check my rain gauge before dark. I’ve had a lot on my plate with personal matters for the last few days.

5:00 pm – WOW, our temporary blockage here in Big Sur made the news in Santa Maria tonight.

3:30 pm – one of those “scattered showers” NOAA predicted for this afternoon, just scattered over me. Hope you are all staying dry and warm. Cuddling up by the fire, if you have one, or under a comforter, if you don’t, with at least one dog next to you, and a book in your lap. That’s the way to spend the rest of the afternoon, if you can.

And from the latest NOAA forecast discussion. It looks like we will be getting a break for a few days. Whew!:

.DISCUSSION...AS OF 2:45 PM PST TUESDAY...SCATTERED SHOWERS THROUGH
THE EVENING THEN MOSTLY DRY THROUGH FRIDAY. NEXT STORM ON TAP FOR
 THE WEEKEND.

2:30 pm – had some amazing hail, earlier. The ex came up and said Plaskett still open. No downed trees. Still hail on the ground. Will give the rain total for the day at the end of the day. Apparently, I forgot to record this morning’s hail on the blog. I will check my calendar records. Also, Big Sur River flow rate back up to 1060. That’s an increase from earlier.

12:12 pm – had some pea size hail. Neighbor informs me we had 145 mph winds up here this weekend. Probably when everything was going sidewise.

11:30 just received from MAF: “Just an update from Steve Dean from USFS; North Coast Ridge Road is closed due to debris flow and there is something going on at Sycamore Canyon.  Steve is going to check on the Sycamore Canyon road but hasn’t come back yet.  If I hear anything I’ll let you know.”

10:45 am – Highway One open, and has been CHP forgot to update their site. Also received an email regarding Partington Canyon. It stated in part that the canyon flashed at least 8-10 ft. above creek bottom over the weekend.

10:15 am – no indication on the CHP website that the road is open, yet.

9:56 am – MAJOR hail storm. The ground is covered with white. I sometimes cannot get an entry up for some minutes after I first start trying on wordpress. Too much traffic? But the times I put up are when I first start trying to post.

9:38 am – Cal-Trans expects to have road open in 1/2 hour.

9:15 am – advisory (downgraded from warning) re flooding in effect until 10:15 am.

8:30 am – first hand report on slide:

Hi Kate,  all is well here in the valley.  The news is saying Sycamore Canyon slide,  but really is at Fernwood, just south.  Clearing out, our guys south of there made it to here no problem earlier.  I had 8 10ths of an inch this a.m.  Lots of Thunder.  Molly got in bed with me, Billy pooped.  Creeks and River staying in their banks.  Looking forward to a little drying out and opening windows.  Talk to you later.

8:00 am – SERIOUS THUNDERSTORM. Also, a friend from town sent me this at 6:00 am (I was still asleep) The Warning should have expired by now – expired at 6:45, but please be alert!! Also, other slides mentioned on the CHP site, but cleared before I woke were at Salmon Creek, JNO of Pheiffer (? JPB?) and Sycamore Canyon. Several of these slid yesterday:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA HAS ISSUED A

* FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR FLASH FLOODING AND DEBRIS FLOWS FOR… MONTEREY COUNTY IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA… THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF BIG SUR VILLAGE…

* UNTIL 645 AM PST

* AT 603 AM PST… NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED AN AREA OF HEAVY RAIN JUST OFF THE BIG SUR COAST.

MUD SLIDES AND ROCK SLIDES CAN POTENTIALLY TRAP AND KILL PEOPLE CAUGHT IN THEIR PATH.

7:30 am – hail woke me at 3:30 am. Currently have .6 of an inch, and it continues to rain. Mudslide at Sycamore Canyon at 6:06 am this morning. Currently both lanes closed, while Cal-Trans works on it. Will be closed about 15 mins. and then 2-3 more times while it is cleared.

Storm Watch, 2/16

8:30 pm – rain started in earnest about 1/2 hour ago. Heads up, as there are accidents being reported in places where slides were previously reported.

5:59 pm – CHP reports a rock slide just north of Rocky Point in NB lane. CHP should be able to move them by hand. Same reported, basketball size in NB lane near Pt. Sur.

5:15 pm – Whoa!! Heavy hail, the entire ground is covered in white from only a few minutes of heavy, intense hail. And so starts what promises to be an interesting evening.

5:00 pm – Rain has started again. From this afternoon’s forecast discussion:

400 PM PST MON FEB 16 2009

.DISCUSSION...AS OF 2:45 PM PST MONDAY...VERY ACTIVE WEATHER
ON TAP FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
RADAR IS ALREADY PICKING UP SOME STRONG CELLS...INCLUDING AT
LEAST ONE LIKELY HAIL PRODUCER...OVER MONTEREY BAY AT THIS
HOUR WITH DBZ VALUES UP TO 60. CONSIDERING THIS IS HAPPENING
WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE REALLY FAVORABLE CONDITIONS...TONIGHT
AND TOMORROW LOOKS QUITE STORMY.

4:30 pm – Yes, I am still here. I’ve been tracking the CHP site all afternoon, too. Unless you want a report on the naps of my four dogs, I’ve had nothing to report. Oh, except the flow rate of the Big Sur River has declined. Topped out at 1200 cu. ft./sec. and was down to 1040 the last I checked, but boy it sure has risen, based on what I have watched on the webcam all afternoon.

1:00 pm – I was just going to post that it was quiet, but the wind picked up slightly, and it has begun to rain again. Coming down quite significantly, a combo of rain, slush, and snow. At least the winds aren’t bad!! For those that don’t know, I am at 3250 ft. The cloudburst lasted less than 15 minutes, and all quiet since – a harbinger of things to come this evening, I expect.

11:30 am – no new slides reported by CHP during the last hour.

10:45 am – RAIN TOTAL CORRECTION – I did not read it from inside correctly. I received 3.5 inches yesterday and last night, bringing the season total to 23.75 inches. Sorry for the error. Hard to read from inside, when it has been blown around. Also, CHP no longer reporting slide at Salmon Creek. Our Cal-Trans crews are working hard and we are all so VERY appreciative. Thank you!

10:14 am – CHP reports large rock slide at Salmon Creek blocking NB lane.

10:00 am -Big Sur River flow rate is growing significantly. Was 900 cubic feet at 8:15 am, and now 1200 cubic feet per second at 9:45 am. Keep an eye out, everyone!!

As JK reports in the comment section, at 9:06 am a slide just south of Burns Creek has closed both lanes. As of 10:00 am, chp is reporting nothing. But I suspect slides will continue throughout the day with the rain totals we have been having. We have had rain the last 6 days, and 10 day out of these first 16 days of February.

8:30 am – Rain total for yesterday and last night was 4.5; season total 24.75 inches. CHP reports traffic hazards all over Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, but nothing regarding Highway One in Big Sur. Cal-Trans also reports nothing.

Debbie reports she spent the night in town, and drove in this morning and there was lots of rock in the NB lane, but everything passable, at least to the Valley. Power is on, creeks and rivers within their banks. Thanks for the first hand report, Debbie!

Friend in town says this morning’s news reported a slide in Carmel Highlands, blocking the road.

There was a line down in front of River Inn last night a little after 11 pm that started a small fire, but everything controlled.

And finally, the Big Sur River discharge rate has jumped to almost 900 cubic feet per second as of 8:15 am.

Storm Watch, 2/15

10:00 pm – okay, one last post. Forecast discussion, usually on a twice every 24 hour schedule, has been publishing more than usual, and issued a new report this evening, around an hour ago. It had this to say:

THE GOOD NEWS FOR THE BURN AREAS OF MONTEREY AND EASTERN SANTA CRUZ
COUNTIES IS THAT THE HEAVIEST RAIN HAS THUS FAR REMAINED TO THE
WEST OF THESE AREAS. LIGHT TO LOCALLY MODERATE RAINFALL TODAY
PUSHED 12 HOUR RAIN TOTALS CLOSE TO USGS THRESHOLDS FOR PRODUCING
DEBRIS FLOWS IN THE NORTHERN PORTION OF THE BASIN BURN SCAR.
HOWEVER...RAIN RATES HAVE RECENTLY DECREASED IN THAT AREA AND SO
THE THREAT FOR DEBRIS FLOWS/FLASH FLOODING HAS SUBSIDED...AT LEAST
TEMPORARILY.

8:30 pm – nothing happening but the incessant wind and rain, so will check back in the am. Be Safe.

7:00 pm – I have been assured that the signs are still up for a “soft” closure at Bixby Bridge and the Big Sur Deli, but that they are not manned. Hotel guests with reservations, as well as residents are allowed through the closure, at this time. Also, when I first started watching the Big Sur River flows this am, reports indicated right around 100 cubic feet per sec. As of 6:15 this evening the rate is given as 646 cubic feet per sec. SurCATS is reporting the river has risen one foot today.

6:00 pm – CHP page is listing NO closures on Highway One in the Big Sur area. Don’t ask me, I’m just reporting what I find.

5:00 pm – the gennie just ran out of gas. I will check in from time to time throughout the evening to conserve battery until morning. Stay alert, everyone. The road is going to decide where to put its own hard closures before morning. How bad it will be, and where are the only issues left in my mind.

4:30 pm – with the main portion of the storm coming in tonight, the confusion about where any “soft” or “hard” closures are going to be placed by CalTrans and/or the CHP is basically unimportant. If the storm lives up to the predictions, it will all be irrelevant tonight anyway, as the ROAD is going to put the “hard” closures where it wants, without ANY regard to the CHP or CalTrans.

And this afternoon’s forecast discussion states: “THREE GAUGES RIGHT

ALONG THE BIG SUR COAST...ANDREW MOLERA...FLORES CAMP...AND ANDERSON
PEAK HAVE ALSO SHOWN AN INCREASE IN HOURLY RAIN RATES DURING THE PAST
HOUR WITH UP TO .31 INCH PER HOUR."

4:14 pm – CHP reports: “CATRANS PUT SOUTHERN CLOSURE @ THE DELI IN BIG SUR”

3:31 pm – CHP reports: “RESIDENTS ALLOWED INTO AREA ONLY.”

3:00 pm – CHP reporting “soft” closure from Bixby Bridge to southern end. No longer restricted to southbound traffic. Still subject to change, and still hoping to keep the closure “soft” this evening. For those of you not familiar to the difference between a “soft” closure and a “hard” closure, with a “soft” closure, residents, employees, etc. are generally permitted into Big Sur and tourist out of Big Sur. With a “hard” closure, only emergency personnel are allowed into the area.

2:31 pm – Cal-Trans to do a “soft” closure at Bixby Bridge to southbound traffic, all through to the “end.” Hope to keep it as a “soft” closure at dusk, but all subject to change as the storm continues. Having trouble keeping up this afternoon.

2:30 pm – solo vehicle accident – hits rock slide at MM 33, right near Esalen. Boy, Cal-Trans and CHP quite busy today. I hope they get their overtime despite the $#@& legislators in Sacramento, Maldanado included, who REFUSE to pass a budget!

2:20 pm – HIGHWAY ONE TEMPORARILY CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS DUE TO SLIDE AT HURRICANE POINT. CT working to get it open.

1:55 pm – another one just posted, just south of Bixby Creek Bridge covering north bound lane. We are liquifying, boys and girls! That’s 5 blockages of Highway One, so far today, and it is only 2 pm!

1:50 pm – two slides, one at Partington Rd. blocking the northbound lane and one at Graham’s Canyon (Grimes?) not yet blocking the road, per chp.

12:15 pm – blog back up and working. Rain coming horizontal, at times.

Almost noon, almost an inch. About to go off line, hopefully only temporarily. Road cleared at 11:46 am.

11:15 am – Trees down, just north of Lucia, blocking both lanes. Highway temporarily closed to give CT the opportunity to remove the trees. Winds picking up. Getting more serious.

10:00 am – CHP no longer reporting a slide at Andrew Molera. Take a look at the expected rain map, which has the burn areas marked. It is a doozie. Here:

http://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/precipForecast.php?cwa=MTR&day=1&img=5

8:45 am – CHP reports a rock slide just south of Andrew Molera. CT should be there by now. I’m sure there will be other slides up and down the coast by this evening. If traveling highway one, BE CAREFUL.

Additionally, there is talk of extending the Flash Flood Watch. Lots of tourists in Big Sur Valley this weekend, according to friends there. Hopefully, tourists will be encouraged to leave early, if necessary. Stay alert, everyone.

Also, around noon, wordpress, the host of my blog, will be making some code changes. They promise only a brief interruption. But you know how that goes!

8:00 am – 1/2 inch, so far. Significant wind, but not as bad as it can get.

6:00 am – rain and wind. Don’t know what time the rain started, but it was present when I woke this am. Rain totals throughout the day. NOAA forecast discussion says that the radar models predict as much as 3/4 of an inch an hour at times during this storm, which may stall over us through Tuesday. Oh, boy.
