I believe it is $25 at the door, but reservations MAY be required, so call Big Sur River Inn to be certain.

Happy Thanksgiving, 2012

Hope yours is a happy one!

(I do realize that there is a misspelling on one of the “thanksgivings”)

I’m back, I think ..

I think I am back … I think. Bigsurdeb put up the last two posts for me, and I couldn’t even get online to see them!

It has been an interesting week – no Internet, no email for four days, no television reception. Damn, I should have thought of the radio! – that is, when I had power, as the batteries had expired. The first real storm of the season is always a wake-up call. What have I forgotten? D batteries, lamp oil, more critter food, replenish the winter meds. The usual.

I have felt so isolated from friends, news, and weather reports. All I knew is what was happening on my mountain, at that moment. Talk about being here now, as Ram Dass has said. Mother Nature was sending me gentle reminders – or maybe not so gentle. All this technology is great, but …

Sometimes, it is nice to enjoy the isolation – especially when there is no choice. Rock Knocker checked on me, before and after, and by phone in between. I got my weather reports from him. I had plenty of fire wood, more than enough food, although I ran out of a few of my favorite things – not necessities, just treats.

I have learned a lot, been reminded of more, and am ready to come out of the early 20th century into the 21st.

I am finally getting email again, and Internet (if this post makes it up) and as of this am, I had 150 emails to read, not counting the junk, which is filtered. So if you have asked me to post something – Big sur Health Clinic, BSVFB, Rocky Creek update, I noticed while I was scanning my in box, I should get to it tomorrow, if the technology goddess allows. If it is a personal email, I will try to get to those soon, as well. I hope this blip in my systems was only a temporary glitch.

BTW, I got a total of 3 and 1/2 inches for the series of storms. The most rainfall at one time was early Sunday morning, as in 2:00 am and beyond, for a total of 1 and 1/2 inches.

So lets hope I am posting again on a regular basis. So, now y’all know why I haven’t been around the cyber neighborhood.

11:00 a.m. – (okay, it is closer to one and still don’t know if I can get this posted after two hours!)  Having some issues with just about ALL my technological systems right now, and have had for the last couple of days.  Trying to sort out.  By now, most of you here in California know we are at the beginning of a series of storm systems, which may impact our highway, the construction at Rocky Creek and so many other aspects, such as my power system, Internet and just life in general.  I had heard the storms would clear out for next week, but yesterday’s latest, conveyed by Rock Knocker who has satellite tv and local news and weather, says that is no longer the case.  I will do what I can to keep this blog up-to-date with current information, but winter always poses a challenge up here in the hinterlands.

At least my non-technological systems (roof and fireplace) are keeping me dry and warm!

Reminder – the CPOA annual meeting is this coming Monday, the 19th at the Grange.

Reminder #2 – Rocky Creek will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m to ALL traffic Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  It will be open for the Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday and Thursday nights, then for the normal weekend opening Friday and Saturday.

Check back later for possible updates, if I get my systems functioning property, or maybe I can get bigsurdeb to update for me!

Misc Photos

Really not much happening, road closures as predicted, weather as predicted, and fall is definitely here! My time is spent bringing in firewood, building fires, taking care of critters, cooking and cleaning. May start cottage vignettes, again.

Here are some photos taken on the way home a few days ago.

Snow report and lost dogs

I did not receive any snow, but Cone Peak did! Couldn’t get a photo, as it was only visible for a short while before it was covered by clouds. I have had a fire going most of the day, although the sun came out for a bit, making my solar system happy.

lost dogs

On 11/2, Dr. Hyde’s grandson, while staying at the Hyde cabin on Plaskett Ridge Rd lost his two pugs. If you have any information, call Ash Chapman at 623-826-3620. Here is a photo of the pugs

Current Radar

Rain started here about 4:50 pm, thus far, it is gentle.

Here is the current radar pic. It isn’t raining where I am, but Big Sur Valley may be getting a few sprinkles.

Looks like there is a bit more coming.

This was originally submitted as a photo of the North fire. It is not. It is of the controlled burn.

Rocky Creek Update #4

MONTEREY COUNTY – Daytime roadwork continues from 7am to 5 pm next Tuesday, Nov. 13 through Friday, Nov. 16. Overnight closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek (Mile Marker 59.5) are scheduled for four nights next week from Monday Nov. 12 through Thursday, Nov. 15 from 9 pm to 7 am each night.

Fire on Fremont Peak? – North Fire

6:00 pm – was still black smoke from the FHL fire just before dark, but it was only 250 acres, and both the USFS and the FHL FD were working it, no evidence it was going to escape into the forest.

Got this eyewitness account from a reader, who forwarded it to me.
“Big fire in Prunedale today, 6 Nov2012! Been working for the last 8 days and upon returning, today at 1:20 p.m., I was helping at the Prunedale Grange voting site and spotted black smoke on the ridge above the American Legion in Prunedale. I heard a fire engine and called the am 1080 radio station so they could immediately alert families in the Prunedale area. They did. However, the other radio stations were running election news and I couldn’t get on the alert onto other stations. The grew bigger as it rapidly moved north up the ridge until we could see flames above the Eucalyptus trees. Embers were falling and a fire started just behind the American Legion. It was surprising how fast the embers started spreading the fire. I called my relatives on McGuffie Road because the fire could have also been on that side of the ridge. No one home so I raced over to their house. Because the wind was blowing east there home wasn’t at risk. About 35 minutes later a CalFire air plane flew over the fire. Meanwhile four fire trucks were above Prunedale North Road with firemen protecting dwellings as the planes dropped retardant. So all of us who paid the recent CalFire protection fee just received our money’s worth.”

4:45 pm – confirmed, North Fire (Fremont Peak) structure fire into vegetation. Evacuations in progress. Also, heavy smoke from South East of me, and a 400-500 a re fire reported on Ft. H-L, but no details yet. It is too far south for the previously mentioned CB near Old Stage Rd and Crazy Horse in North Salinas Valley. I’ll be watching all of this, and trying to get additional details.

4:15 pm – One of my readers reported a fire on Fremont Peak. I am trying to confirm that now. If you have any information, please add to the comments below. I will update as soon as I know more.
