Town trips

When I moan about how long it takes to do some simple grocery shopping, Mother Nature reminds me how lucky I truly am. I think of my girlfriends in So Cal, my mother, God bless her, when she lived in Redondo, and on and on, and am struck by such incredible differences. Yes, they can get delivery of their groceries. Yes, they can choose from hundreds of different stores, and yes, they pay a price for this convenience … Too big a price, in my opinion. I get to see this when I go grocery shopping. What do you see?

Rain, glorious rain! Real rain!

7:00 am- i woke up at 4:00 am to see that I had received only .04″ of rain. Nothing to get excited about. Went back to sleep around 5:00, and still nothing significant. At 6:30, a decent hour, I woke to see it was “raining cats and dogs” per my gauge, and noted I had received .55″! Now THAT is something to get excited about, but it gets even better. Now, a 1/2 hour later, my gauge reads .75! When I read Pam Cromie’s FB post about hoping for 2″, I thought, yeah, right. Now, I think it is possible. enjoy, enjoy! I am going to build a fire, as it is a tad chilly.

Foto Friday, 4/24/15

i didn’t get photos up last Friday as I was at a Memorial service for Rock Knocker’s brother. I have some photos of the San Luis Reservoir I thought were of interest. While low, there is still a lot of water there!

Instead, I bring you  a fun shot from Mike Morales, his fifth or sixth photo featured on a local (KION’s) weather report. Congratulations, Mike! And thanks for letting me feature this.

Grass Fire Shuts down 101 near Salinas Airport & early am fire at PB Lodge

4:00 pm – Two vegetation fires in Salinas have shut down Highway 101 at Airport Boulevard due to heavy smoke across the freeway. The fire was reported at 3:10 p.m. on the roadside of southbound Highway 101, but by 3:28 p.m. a second fire started near the northbound lanes just south of the Salinas Municipal Airport.

The Lodge at Pebble Beach Experienced a fire this am just after 4:00 am. I have a photo of that fire which I will continue to try to upload.

Clueless in Big Sur, 4/20/15

i want to start a new column, so-to-speak. Stories, preferably humorous, Or made so … About our clueless visitors. I’ll start, but send me any experiences you wish to share, and, if they have a point, but use humor to make it, I will publish … With credit or anonymously, as you prefer. Send your contribution to

I’ve noticed that Saturday night the wilderness visitors are a bit stranger than those who come on Friday night. I am at a loss to explain the difference.

This past Saturday, late afternoon, early evening, I came upon several cars heading up Plaskett. One, a Subaru Outback didn’t want to pull over, so I rode his tail up Plaskett. From Gary’s driveway  until the bull frog, this guy wouldn’t pull over. Finally, a wide spot, and I was able to pass. I watched him in the rear view mirror, but he held back. I gave him no more thought. I needed to pee, but there were campers at all my usual spots, so I waited until I got to my gate.

As I opened my Jeep door and went to get out, I was suddenly surrounded by 3 guys from the Subaru Outback. They were startled by my gate, and wanted to get through. “We have to get through, we are meeting friends at Prewitt Ridge camp.” Really? Demanding I let them through? Oh, yeah, like that’s going to work. “No, you can’t go through.” “But, our GPS sent us this way.”  “I don’t care if your mother sent you this way. You cant come through. Now, turn around, go down to the highway and go up Nacimiento. Goodbye.”

Clueless in Big Sur.

4 Brush Fires Near Salinas Valley State Prison

7:00 4 Fires started near SVSP a little after 5 pm this evening. I don’t have many details, yet, but I’ll add what I can find out, if anything. From KION:

I’m no expert, but sounds like a trailer chain dragging or something similar, causing sparks.

Fire crews put out the flames, which stretched a half-mile along Highway 101’s center divide, Gonzales firefighters said.

It took crews 15 minutes to put the fire out. Cleanup efforts could take an hour, firefighters said.

The cause of the fires is unknown.

The Gonzales Fire Department is investigating, but CAL FIRE assisted in the firefighting efforts.
