Illegal Campfires

were rampant yesterday. Maybe that why I saw USFS LE officer Roberta  for the first time in years. She was at the bottom of Plaskett when I saw her. Maybe she got up To Prewitt last night or today. As I told her, people are absolutely crazy this year. What part of this sign don’t you get?

I count five. I don’t get it.

oh, and while I am ranting … What in the heck was MoCo Weekly thinking in publishing an article on hiking the Buckeye Trail down here which encourages campfires, even thourgh the writer mentioned the drought and lack of water in the area? Bad, bad idea, people! That intern needs to be educated, as do her editors and publishers, apparently. Please contact MCWeekly and call them on their irresponsible reporting.

Wildfire at Pogonip Preserve in Santa Cruz

12:30 pm – currently it is 5 acres. It is causing some traffic issues with looky-loos on Highway 9 and Coolridge, per the CHP.

On another note, a bear has been spotted in the area of Garapatta State Beach, Garapatta, and the Trout Farm.

El Niño, 2015-2016

From David Swain, of Weather West:

“[T]he  flagship American and European models (the CFS and ECMWF, respectively) continue to hint at the possibility that this event could eventually become the strongest on record. That’s a pretty tall order–given the enormous magnitude of the events which occurred in 1982-1983 and 1997-1998. On the other hand, model projections have become increasingly eyebrow-raising at the same time of year when our confidence in their reliability increases dramatically, so it would be unwise to discount them outright. Generally speaking, healthy skepticism is warranted when complex dynamical models make predictions that involve totally unprecedented extreme events. But 2015 has already been a year of record-breaking meteorological extremes across vast swaths of the Northern Hemisphere, and considerable evidence suggests that there will be more to come. At this point, it seems quite likely that very strong El Niño conditions will be in place by late autumn 2015, and there is some risk that the present event could eclipse even the extreme events of 1982-1983 and 1997-1998….

Overall summary: a very strong El Niño event in the tropical Pacific is now highly likely, and although the likelihood of a wetter-than-average winter in California is increasing, considerable uncertainty remains due to a highly unusual temperature configuration elsewhere in the Pacific.”

Deer Fire – Lake Nacimiento

I have been trying to blog about this fire since yesterday, to no avail. No internet all day.

Cal Fire threw absolutely everything but the kitchen sink at it, so it never got out of control, although it was spotting over retardant lines yesterday. Today it is only about 150 acres, last I heard, and they were getting the upper hand. Here is a photo taken by Tarren Collins taken shortly after it started at only 25 acres.

Okay, maybe the photo won’t load. Darn.

Final July 4th Fire in Big Sur

it is SO hard to keep from editorializing on this one, if what one witness said is true.

around 7:30 pm – a reader posted in the comments section in my last post about witnessing a fire south of Grimes Point. Fortunately, it was caught early and silenced fast. This is what WildCAD recorded:

07/04/2015 19:40 LPF-1907
ROAD Wildfire HWY 1 MM 32 . 7EDW1 BC12LPF E18LPF Langston Effective 0830 Light Brush 0.2 36.087 x 121.618

It was only .2 of an acre at final count thanks to the fine efforts of all our firefighters from all agencies. Thanks, everyone!  MM 32 puts it around Anderson Canyon, just south of JPBurns.

According to Jim Kimball a witness said he or she saw a family BBQing along the side of the road and then dump their live coals over the side. As I said, if this is true, it is hard not to editorialize about this one.

Fourth of July Wildfire in Big Sur

UPDATE 10:30 am – apparently, this was quite small, and handled by the CHP, but fire responded to make sure it was out, and no flare-ups. BTW, if I don’t do an update within 1/2 hour on any fire in Big Sur, you may infer that I haven’t been able to get back to my blog. In that instance, please check the comments for updates by those in the know, like Jon Knight of the BSVFB, who is very good about providing information. Thanks, Jon.

10:00 am – started around 9:30. Don’t know which side of road, but west side doesn’t have a lot of fuel after the Pfeiffer Fire. I’m sure it is giving people there flashbacks.

Thunder, lightning, and rain!

Rain may help, but there are strike downs on the eastern portion of the Santa Lucias. A fire started in Lockwood. Keep an eye out, and call it in. Could easily cause a wildfire … Somewhere … And resources could be spread thin.

PAY ATTENTION, PLEASE!
