PET VACCINATIONS IN BIG SUR?

Dr. Kocher, of Oceanview Pet Hospital, has generously offered to come to Big Sur
(see below) to vaccinate pets who may be exposed to canine distemper.

Thanks for the information. Where you live, I highly recommend vaccinations against distemper parvo lepto lymes disease rattlesnake hepatitis . Furthermore, I recommend annual blood testing and preventative medicine for heartworms. Vaccination and preventative medicine in general are the least expensive, least uncomfortable form of medicine. If you wish, I could arrange to come to a place like the grange and hold a vaccination clinic. There would be a charge for this service but it would be far more convenient that traveling to town.

Friends, we’re noting dead foxes up here on the ridge, and the Monterey SPCA is reporting some too, which they believe are killed by canine distemper (still being tested), so I hope your loved ones have their distemper shots!

Fungus Face-off

I have a confession … I am not fond of fungus, but I tasted some offerings that were amazing. Who would have thought fungus could be such an incredible Macaroon? (Ventana) or boar served on baquette (Ripplewood) or Carnitas-mushroom soup (Roadhouse) to mention but three. Everything was spectacular and I am already salivating for next year. Ventana did the superb job one would expect from such an establishment.

Ocean Frontiers 1I, A New England story for Sustaining the Sea, brings audiences face-to-face with those now embarking on the nation’s first multi-state ocean plan.

The 40 minute film highlights the historic and emerging ocean uses of New England waters and introduces viewers to people working on the Northeast regional ocean planning initiative. In a region steeped in old maritime tradition, we see a modern wave of big ships, energy industries, and a changing climate, now testing the limits of an already crowded sea. But in a pioneering trial of far-sighted planning—pushed by blueprints for offshore wind energy—old residents and new are coming together to keep their ocean and livelihoods alive.

Dr. George Somero, David and Lucile Packard Professor of Marine Science and Associate Director–Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University, retired, will answer questions and help us understand why this film is important to those of us living on Monterey Bay.

Ocean Frontiers 11 is an inspiring story of citizens coming together to promote healthier economies and healthier seas across New England, and is the second of an award-winning film series produced by Green Fire Productions. (The first film shown in Big Sur last January had a standing room only turnout.)
We see how collaborative planning reduces conflicts over ocean resources and puts us on a new path of ocean stewardship. Rhode Island citizens—coastal planners, fishermen, Native American tribal leaders, environmental advocates, scientists, and wind energy executives—are featured in the film, showcasing the Ocean State’s work to not only identify options for developing offshore wind power, but to prepare for the full gamut of impending demands upon the state’s ocean.

• Saturday, January 8, 2014 – Wild Mushroom Walk and Talk” at Pfeiffer State Park and at Ventana Inn & Spa, both led by expert foragers. Cost per person is $35.
• Saturday, January 18, 2014 – “Fungus Face-Off” on the deck at Ventana Inn & Spa from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Cost per person is $45. A friendly competition among some of the area’s notable chefs featuring chanterelles and other fabulous fungi. Celebrity judges are KGO’s Joel Riddell, Jim Dodge and Wendy Brodie. Attendees can forage with the judges and be part of the process, even learn what the judges look for!
o Attendees also have an opportunity to cast their vote for “People’s Choice”.
o Participating restaurants are: Big Sur Roadhouse, Hyatt Carmel Highlands, Esalen, Big Sur Bakery, Fernwood Resort, Bernardus Lodge, Carmel Valley Ranch and The Restaurant at Ventana.
o Quail and Olive will do an olive oil and vinegar tasting.

Amgen

For those of you who missed it, Amgen has announced the route for the 2014 race, and it comes back to the coast.

The race will be May 11-18th. The Fourth leg of the race begins in Monterey, and ends in Cambria.

I’m guessing the fourth stage will be May 14th, just before I need to leave for SFO. I’m hoping, anyway.
