Road Updates

Training exercises are going on at Ft. Hunter Leggett, so Nacimiento is closed for up to an hour at a time, random days and times, on the East side of Big Sur, where the base and USFS borders join and on the eastern side of the base at Nacimiento and Mission Rd. this is in effect now until March 9th.

On Rocky Creek, overnight closures are complicated, but not total. Sunday, March 3rd thru Wednesday, March 6th, there will be 10 minute closures from 9 pm to 11 pm, then 1/2 hour closures from 11 pm to 7am. Thursday, March 7th there will be a hard closure from 10 pm until 7 am Friday morning.

Okay, got that now?

BTW, some technical difficulties of an unknown source. I am not getting ANY emails on my iPad, from home or abroad. I am still getting them on my iPhone, though. I am having trouble with sundry other apps on my iPad, but not all, and some I can’t get at home, I get while abroad on the coast. More troubleshooting is in order, I guess! If I can’t figure it out, I guess I’ll have to take my iPad in to Verizon or Apple. I love technology!

After a day and a half of that, for some bizzare reason, I am now getting emails on my iPad, again. Who knows what happened?

Working to save Highway from itself, and Mother Nature

Following is a photojournal of my trip north Wednesday. Three construction areas, we had to traverse. This is why we don’t go north much right now.

It is not just the stopping for 10 minutes, or more, EACH, it is getting in a line of cars from which one cannot escape!

Finally, Rocky Creek.

Jade Festival, 2012 & Rocky Creek Viaduct closure update

This morning, all campgrounds down here on the South Coast were full in anticipation of the Jade Festival. The heat wave has broken, so expect foggy and chilly mornings, burning off in the afternoon for beautiful sunshiny afternoons. The festival starts tomorrow at noon and continues Saturday and Sunday from 10-6 pm. Our wonderful Jewell of the South Coast is the featured star, with a supporting cast of great food, live music and wonderful friendly people. This is a family gathering, on a school, so no drugs or alcohol are permitted on site. Fur kids must be on a leash.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HIGHWAY 1/ROCKY CREEK VIADUCT PROJECT IS UNDERWAY—
OVERNIGHT CLOSURES TO BEGIN OCTOBER 15

MONTEREY COUNTY – After further consultation with the contractor, the hours
for full closures of Hwy. 1 at Rocky Creek (PM 59.5) will be 9 pm to 7 am
beginning Monday, October 15 through the end of February, Caltrans
officials have announced.

Roadwork will occur seven days a week, 24/7 with one-way signalized traffic
control. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time. However, full
overnight closures will take place five nights a week Sundays through
Thursdays. No full closures will occur on Friday/Saturday nights.

The project to construct a permanent viaduct about 15 miles south of Carmel
near the Rocky Creek Bridge along Highway 1 began on Sept. 4. Completion is
scheduled by Labor Day 2013, weather permitting.

Daily roadwork schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions
and other factors.

If my calculations are correct, that is four and one-half months of overnight closures, five days a week.

First overnight closure set at Rocky Creek

Update, less than an hour later, Collin Jones sent out this:

“Hey folks, our news release is going out later today. The temporary signal
is up and the updated schedule now calls for overnight closures to begin on
Thursday, Oct. 11 @ 9 pm.

Thanks, Colin”

“Heads up everyone:

The permanent viaduct repair of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek 15 miles south of
Carmel is underway, with the overnight closures from 9 pm to 7 am set to
begin on Oct. 7 or 8 and continuing for 3-4 months. Susana Cruz, Jim
Shivers and I in the Public Information Office will be sending out frequent
traffic notices, updating our Big Sur traffic hotline (888-836-0866) and
our crews will be deploying numerous message signs on both ends of Big Sur.

We’ll be sending out more details in a news release by Monday, Oct. 1.

As always, Caltrans greatly appreciates the community’s support and
cooperation. This project is important in maintaining the long-term
stability of the vital Highway 1 corridor from Cambria to Carmel. Working
together, we can make this another successful transportation project along
the Big Sur Coast.

Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks, Colin Jones
