Rain Report, 4/7/15

Noon – final tally, 1.3″ nice. As to snow … I have a cloud sitting right on trop of me. A friend from Willow Creek called and said it was clear everywhere else except for Plaskett top. So, can’t see Cone Peak. Sorry. Maybe later today.

8:00 am – Was awake at 3 am when it all started, then woke again by that wonderful, almost-forgotten sound. So far, .just over an inch at 8 am wow! That ought to keep the onset of fire season off for a bit. Maximum wind gusts of 33 mph this morning.  Time to get the fire and the coffee going. All so delicious!

The Coming Weather System

Woohoo! I’m at 3200′ but that means I should get some flurries, right? First time this season.

From my SLO Co weather person:

“Partly cloudy skies and relatively cool April temperatures are on tap today as the weather transitions to a wet and unsettled   pattern. Today’s maximum temperatures will reach the low to  mid-60s throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

“A vigorous cold front will move over the Central Coast on Tuesday  morning with strong to gale-force (25 to 38 mph) southerly winds  and moderate to heavy rain. There is also a chance of thunderstorms  as the amount of sunlight is rapidly increasing at this time of  the year. Total rainfall amounts are expected to range from one-half to three quarters of an inch with possibly higher  amounts in the Santa Lucia Mountains.

“Snow amounts in the Sierra could exceed a foot above 5,000 feet, with 9 and 12 inches as low as 4,000 feet and possibly 6 inches or so at 3,500 feet Tuesday into Wednesday.

“Dense ground fog and perhaps a few lingering showers are forecast  for Wednesday morning, with increasing post-frontal northwesterly winds and clearing skies Wednesday afternoon through Thursday.

“The marine layer will return Thursday night into Friday morning   with extensive low clouds, fog and areas of drizzle. Another area   of low pressure may move through the Central Coast on Friday night  or Saturday morning for increasing southerly winds and potentially   moderate rain. Unfortunately, there is a good chance the low will  weaken before making landfall and only clouds will move through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. The next chance for  precipitation should be around April 14.

Happy Easter!

2:00 pm – I’ll be darned … Rain. It began around 1:30, and by 2 I had received .02″ and increased to .06″ an hour. Also had to build a fire in the first time in …. Hmm … Can’t remember. I am going to so enjoy this afternoon. Already had the company and the ham, rain started and Rock Knocker went home. I’m going to enjoy a quiet afternoon with a fire and a movie. Perfect Easter. Oh, and there is a “hanger” – a huge tree down, but caught up. Ralph said it was spooky, like a tunnel to drive through. Was going to town tomorrow, but rethinking that.

Doesn’t  look like much, if any Rain, for Big Sur tonight, but Tuesday through Wednesday looks good! I am watching the clouds come in from just about every direction, though. Also starting to layer up, and thinking of bringing in more firewood. All good things. Happy Easter to all of you who celebrate this holiday.

Foto Friday, 4/3

Today, I dug into the archives. I have misplaced my battery charger for my camera. I still have the bowels of my Jeep, behind the seats, where everything ends up, to search, but after that, I give up! If I’ve posted these before, forgive me, I’ve lost track.

I have meant to post these for quite some time, but always seem to get distracted. Jeff Mallory graciously let me tour Emile Normans house quite some time ago, and I always wanted to post these photos taken there. KQED did a lovely documentary of the mans life that I thoroughly enjoyed also. I came  away from both in awe of the man’s genius.

The entire house is a work of art, and Emile did it all. If I can find the link to the documentary, I will post it here. Worth the time to watch it, as his was a fascinating life.

Rain in our future?

from my SLO Co Meterologist:

“A cold front is forecast to produce increasing southerly winds and rain on Tuesday. At this time, rainfall amounts will range  between one half to three quarters of an inch. This morning’s model runs are indicating unsettled weather with possible rain  continuing through the end of next week.”

Can you say Hallelujah?

Overnight closure of SouthboundHighway One at Highway 68

This is as clear as any opaque item, at least to me. It appears there will be a working detour, with signs, but darned if I can figure it out based on this description.

OVERNIGHT CLOSURE OF SOUTHBOUND HIGHWAY 1/HIGHWAY 68 WEST CONNECTOR RAMP IN MONTEREY BEGINS ON MONDAY, APRIL 6

MONTEREY – An overnight project to stabilize a highway embankment will require the full

closure of the southbound Highway 1/Highway 68 west connector ramp beginning Monday

night, April 6, Caltrans officials have announced.

Overnight roadwork will require this connector ramp closure for four nights starting Monday, April 6 through Thursday, April 9 from 8 pm to 6 am the next day. A signed detour will be in place directing traffic south to Ocean Ave. then return northbound using the adjacent frontage road back onto Hwy. 1, following signs back to the northbound Hwy. 68 off-ramp.

NOTE: No two consecutive ramps will be closed at one time. Electronic Message Signs will be posted to alert motorists, who can expect delays not to exceed 10 minutes, which is the estimated time to complete the detour.

Roadwork will consist of stabilizing the slope adjacent to the southbound Hwy. 1/Hwy. 68 connector due to slide damage last December. Roadwork is expected to be complete by Friday morning, April 10.

The contractor for this $281,000 project near the Community Hospital is Monterey Peninsula of Marina, CA.

Site Seasonal Update

Those of you who have been following this blog for a year or more have noticed that twice a year I update my links to the right. I change the focus of the links from weather conditions to fire conditions and vice a versa. It is incredibly early to change from weather to fire, but given what has been happening, I have added back in many of my fire links. But also given that I am an opptomist still hoping for more rain, I have left in some of the more important weather links. So, for a while, at least, we will have a hybrid of links to choose from. If you have a favorite link, please feel free to send it along.
