Satellite update

Finally have scheduled a service call for Tuesday between 11-2. Cell has been very unreliable, so until Tuesday, enforced internet withdrawals. Frankly, I needed this.

BTW, 50 acre wildfire on FHL, but reported in the “flat part’ (aka Stoney Valley?) so probably not a threat. I’ll find a way to report if necessary.

Full Highway 1 closure from 4-6 today at Granite

Date/Time: 5-20-16 at 2:50 pm

Location: Southbound State Route 1 in Monterey County, approximately four miles south of Carmel Highlands at Granite Canyon Bridge (PM 66.66).
Description of Incident:

Big rig went over embankment last night. Southbound Highway 1 is under one-way reversing traffic control. Current traffic delays of 10-15 minutes. There will be about a 60-75-minute full highway closure between 4-6 pm to move the big rig off Highway 1. Motorists are advised avoid Highway 1 or to take alternate route until the big rig has been removed and road is safe to re-open. CHP and Caltrans working collaboratively.

Bigsurkate’s Satellite

I got home at 6 pm last night, and left the gate open since I was going out again today for a meeting. No one was camping on Plaskett. I thought I would take the chance. Not good. A trespasser came through and misaligned my satelittle. I will be sporadic until that is fixed.

Wildfire, FHL

4;30 pm – It started this afternoon, but I have taken the day off (it IS my birthday) and was in town. I am informed that they would not let people through Nacimiento-Fergusson RD. It was reported as only 2-3 acres in Stony Valley, and it is just May, so probably all is fine. I will post further when I get home, if necessary.

Wildfire Report, 5/18/16

8:00 pm – the “Bob” Fire (Camp Roberts) is holding at 1500 acres and is 40% contained. Hopefully, as often happens, it will “lay down” tonight. The smoke drift is visible here on the South Coast, particularly over Willow Creek.

6:30 pm – A/A is reporting 1500 acres ad making good runs. Also, from the scanner: “Just heard SLO send two rigs up to M/C  (Monterey County) for a veg fire on Interlake Rd. with a cross of San Antonio Rd. …engs. 3472 an 3481 have been sent up to it” Bob is making its way in a different direction, toward San Marco RD.

6:00 pm – 6 tankers working it now

4:50 pm – 600 acres and it jumped the Nacimiento River

4:20 pm – 500 acres. Photos by viewers of SLOStringer

3:30 pm – Currently there are two fires burning in Atascadero – one structure and one veg. Equipment and A/A pulled off the veg fire for a new fire burning on or near Camp Roberts. One report is it is on Avery RD. And Bivwac RD. One report from an observer:
“This thing has already generated pyrocumulus clouds…. uneven-sounding firefight…. I.C. requesting five more engines…. and just told SLU that the fire has jumped the river (I assume the Nacimiento River, not the Salinas River) and “has nothing to stop it.”

Start time for Amgen moved up

For whatever reason, Amgen decided to move the start time up by 15 minutes, so racers will now depart at 9:55. That means the Amgen schedule (and yours) needs to be adjusted accordingly.

From the SLO Tribune:

“The start time for Wednesday’s Amgen Tour of California bicycle race leg in Morro Bay has been moved up to 9:55 a.m. from its previously scheduled start time of 10:10 a.m.

Amgen officials notified the city of the change late Tuesday afternoon.

MONTEREY COUNTY – One day of slide repair by our maintenance crews along a quarter-mile of southbound Highway 1 between Carmel Valley and Rio Roads in Carmel is scheduled on Saturday morning, May 21, Caltrans officials announced today.

The purpose of this roadwork is to improve traveler safety by making highway repairs. It is being done by the Caltrans Monterey Maintenance Crew.

Overuse of Big Sur

Here’s one person’s solution. I grabbed this off of FB:

The first agency/residents meeting will take place later this week. Unfortunately, I have to attend a funeral so will not be able to attend. Representative residents from both the North and South Coast will be in attendance. The meeting venue is small, so I don’t believe it will be open to everyone who is interested, at this juncture. At least we are finally getting some dialogue going after last month’s meeting.
