Dog Found Me – lost dog

Well, I had quite the surprise this morning.

My routine is that when the sun comes over the hill, I get up, let the dogs out, and pee … In that order. On nice mornings, like this am, I leave the door open so any of the dogs that want to come back in, can.

After I pee, I get back in bed. Sometimes I go back to sleep, but mostly, I don’t. This morning, I heard a dog next to my bed, looked down to see which one it was, and was surprised to see a new face greeting me. Surprise, surprise …

This is the face that greeted me this morning:

She is very skinny and covered with tics. She is very sweet, comes up to me, whether I am standing or sitting, and immediately sits. I fed her two cups of dry food, which she scarfed. She would have eaten the whole bag, but I don’t want her barfing, so I’ll give her another two cups later this afternoon. We are working on the tics.

She is a border collie mix, possibly with terrier, as her coat is wiry, not silky like a BC. She has a collar, but no tags. She does not bark, and seems to come from a one dog household, as she snarls whenever one of my dogs gets near her. She has very long legs, but probably only weighs 20-25 lbs – not sure as I haven’t tried to pick her up. She is patient with the tic picking, so far, and doesn’t object, at all.

If anyone recognizes this dog, please call me at 831-818-8026. I am sure there is a heartbroken owner somewhere. She immediately took to me, so she seems to be well-loved – or just so grateful for a place and food out of the wild. Pass the word. I will post this to FB and Wild Big Sur, also, so it can be easily shared. Much as I am taken with this dog, and would easily add her to my pack, I am happy to reunite her with her owner.

Snow report and lost dogs

I did not receive any snow, but Cone Peak did! Couldn’t get a photo, as it was only visible for a short while before it was covered by clouds. I have had a fire going most of the day, although the sun came out for a bit, making my solar system happy.

On 11/2, Dr. Hyde’s grandson, while staying at the Hyde cabin on Plaskett Ridge Rd lost his two pugs. If you have any information, call Ash Chapman at 623-826-3620. Here is a photo of the pugs

Halloween Cat, and other photos

Here is Midnight, my kitten, fast growing up. Her sister, Moonlight, is identical. I tell them apart by two things: the tiny white tuffs in Midnight’s ears, and their personalities. Moonlight would never sit still for a portrait!

That one, and the ones which follow, we’re all taken Wednesday, the day of the big storm, when the sun came out, just before sunset.

Just because …

This is just one aspect of the magic that is Big Sur. This lonely little columbine is one of the few remaining.

When I saw this, I had to stop and capture it. The dark, the contrast between the one bright spot and the shadowy green called me. I shot it dark in the camera, and unlike most shots, I only took one, and was happy with what I saw in the LCD. I was even happier when I saw it larger on my computer. This is straight out of the camera, exactly what I witnessed. Mother Nature’s gift. And interestingly, I violated all the cannons of composition by placing the subject dead center, and still, it works.

Columbine & Ferns

Just because … Mother Nature’s beauty cannot be enhanced.

On a completely different note, Gideon has been sick since Saturday, and was at the vet’s Tuesday, and again today, when he was admitted to the hospital. News tonight is that he is improving. His fever is going down, and his pain has been lessened by an inflammatory drug. We are hoping he will come home Friday. Dr. will call again tomorrow morning. I am a tad distracted from my blog, but had this one prepared to go up. I’ll be back when Gideon is home again.

Gideon News

My first love, Gideon, came home today. He is so much better, and so peppy, it is hard to believe he has been through hell for the last couple of months. His first shot created so many problems. This time, he got two shots in two days, but he is like the puppy he was (even though he is 9 years old – he is a BC/Aussie mix, after all). We are all so grateful for the thoughts and prayers of our extended family of friends. We still have to watch him rather closely for a couple of weeks, but the worst is over. Now that this is over, I should be able to go back to regular reporting.

Here is that beautiful guy, again:

Gideon, the Wonder Dog

Photo Contest & Gideon

Today is the last day to submit your entry – until midnight tonight, so get those entries in. Photos and voting in a few days.

Gideon received his 3rd heart worm shot yesterday, his second the day before. He’s had to stay at the vets for the last few days. I go pick him up, shortly. He will have to stay quiet for a few weeks, but so far, he has come through this difficult treatment very well.

Of note: A fire was reported yesterday around 4:15 pm in the area of Prewitt Ridge and/or Wild Cattle. Follow-up reports from neighbors indicate this was a false alarm, nothing was located. WildCAD-LPNF does have a “wildfire” report listed on their site for 6:30 pm, but as I said, it appears to have been a false alarm.

A lot is going on with the traffic light at CV Rd and Highway One. Emails and postings have been provided by Pelican Network and the Chamber email systems. I will try to get a post up regarding this situation in the next few days. Gideon comes first.

Only in Big Sur …

The First Annual Burning Dog Festival, organized out of Santa Cruz, is being held June 11-14th at Plaskett Creek Campground. Yes, a “burning man”-inspired event that is dog-friendly, and includes hikes and events for your pooch,

The schedule is quite ambitious and can be found here: schedule. It includes hikes, agility course, art with your dog, costumes, BBQ, Luau, and trips to the Esalen hot tubs.

Of course, our local events that weekend include Jazz on the River at River Inn on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 pm. (see schedule here) and the Big Sur Wine Expedition is June 9th and 10th. (Additional information here). There is always a great line-up at the Henry Miller Library. The Woodsist Festival for that Saturday is sold-out, with a waiting list, but you can see the month’s events here: HML June Events. There are always global art, music, and dance events at Spirit Garden but I don’t see an events calendar for this year. Fernwood has live music on both Friday and Saturday nights and sometimes on Sundays and you can see their June line-up here. The Maiden Publick House often has live music on the weekends, too.

There are probably other events, as well, but I scoured and could not find them. But there are always “events” in Big Sur – like hiking, surfing, bicycling, campfire talks, shopping for local crafts, books, and other gems. It is the time when we shake off the sleepiness of our winter slumber, and host the millions and millions of people who visit us each year.

But for unusual? The 1st Annual Burning Dog Event has to take the cake. Should be an interesting weekend at Plaskett Creek Campground.

Lost Dogs

UPDATE: The below was written on May 15, 2010, but today, June 1st, the owner reported the return of her lost dogs. I am always a sucker for a happy ending!! Way to go, Universe!

Today, I’m going to be a community bulletin board, in case someone can help. Anyone who has been following my blog for any length of time knows I have a sign in my office that says: “The more I get to know some people – the more I like dogs.” I don’t just like them, I think they are furry angels sent to guard and play with us and teach us how to really love.

BTW, for those following the Gideon saga, he had tolerated his first heart worm shot quite well, and is coming back into himself – which is a mixed blessing when trying to keep him quiet. He gets lots of pills, but I’ve found that Ricotta cheese works really well!

Please help us find these lost dogs. We are not sure where they ended up, but they could be in LA area. Please pass the word along to anyone you know who might have information about the people, the car, or the dogs.

We are getting the word out in LA about these dogs: The two Rat Terriers were picked up at Point 16 (near Lucia). The people who picked up the dogs, are presumed to be conscionable. They inquired with Avis at Lucia and with a Ranger at the Ranger Station on the South Coast of Big Sur.

Unfortunately no contact information was exchanged. There was mention of taking the two terriers to an animal shelter in San Luis Obispo but that has not manifested as of yet. We know that they were driving a Green or grey/silver Land Rover and were headed to LA?

One friend of the owner has been calling animal shelters in the LA area, another friend made the posters and is distributing them, another is keep Facebook up-to-date.

If you have any information, please call the above number, or email me at kwnovoa@mac.com Thank you.

Gideon

This is one of the loves of my life, Gideon, an eight year-old Aussie/BC mix. He was diagnosed with heart worm. We are treating it, but it is not a good experience for either of us, and he won’t even start the shots until May.

If you have dogs, and either live in or bring them to Big Sur, make sure and get them tested and get them on heart worm preventative medications. I am so sorry I let his run out. Thankfully, Dakota is not affected.

A Big Sur Christmas

Tonight, around 6 pm Stacey, a reader of this blog, posted a notice about 2 lost dogs on my “Let there be peace” posting. Strange, I thought. Those sound like my neighbors dogs. In the next hour or so, I called my neighbor, went to his house, twice, determined my neighbor was out of town, and the dog sitter said the dogs were missing. He was just sitting there, doing nothing. He wasn’t looking for them.

I notified Stacey that the dogs were indeed my neighbor’s dogs. She knew my neighbor, and worked with him. So Stacey and her husband went out on Christmas Day evening to look for the dogs, and thankfully, found them and took them home. This is probably the best Christmas gift my neighbor got this year. This is what Big Sur does. We take care of each other, and our fur kids. Thank you Stacey for caring and taking the time on this holiday to recover my neighbor’s fur kids for him.

On another note, the photos below depict what often happens on a Big Sur Christmas — gifts of Jade.

Thank you, CK. What Christmas is complete without the Big Sur Jade?
