Mud Creek cracks

From Mud Creek last week, Friday, I think. I drove it Thursday and it looked about the same, top photo from Cal Trans, bottom photos by bigsurkate. If one enlarges the top Photo, one can see the crack goes almost to the center line

I answered:

I have a blog post going up tomorrow with photos from yesterday showing the cracks. It is something we will watch, certainly. I will be checking it at least once a week to see if there are any significant changes, but then Madonna construction is still on site, so I am sure they will be checking as well. If there is any changes of note, I will be publishing on my blog. I would not say we “worry about things like that” as you ask, much more like we anticipate things like this. We have a saying regarding this road during each winter. The question is not IF it will close; the questions are: when will it close, where will it close, and for how long will it remain closed.

Green Bridge on FHL closed for repairs, 8/27/18

I contacted FHL regarding repairs, and was informed that they have no specific date (nor even time frame) for the repair of this bridge. There is no promise or guarantee it will be repaired in time for winter rains. In the mean time, civilians are allowed to use the low water crossing next to it. Of course, if the bridge is not repaired before the rains come, then later in the winter, the low water crossing may become impassable, as it has before.

Mary and I were remembering just the other day a high school field trip in 1995, when the Carmel River Bridge went out, this bridge went out, and Highway One at Soda Springs went out and we were stuck in San Simeon, until Cal Trans could “punch us through” at Soda Springs. I will be keeping my eye on this bridge repair and let you know what I learn.

Overturned truck closes Highway 1 a mile north of Ragged Point for hours

I saw this truck on the side of the road south of San Simeon Pier on my way home, and stopped and spoke to the drivers. No one was injured and the truck was also undamanged. It was a lucky break. I finally got the video to upload, so here you go!
Okay, I figured out my dash cam, how to retrieve and download. I haven’t been able to upload from McDonalds, so will try when I get home.

Highway 1 Climbing Lane Project Update for Week of August 20th

The current phase of work on the Highway 1 Climbing Lane Project was completed on the morning of August 17th in advance of Car Week event traffic. Construction will resume regular work hours the week of August 27th.

Here is what to expect for the week of August 20th.

  • Day time off-roadway work for landscaping and miscellaneous minor work items.
  • Overnight work for crews to install traffic detectors at both Carmel Valley and Rio Roads. This will require some alternating lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Looking ahead to the week of August 27th, crews will be working on both Rio Road between Highway 1 and the Crossroads Shopping Center and on Carmel Valley Road between Highway 1 and Carmel Rancho Boulevard in preparation for final paving, which is currently planned for the week of September 4. There will be additional details on this next week.

Caltrans Accelerates Repairs on State Route 1 in Monterey County Due to SB 1 Funds

Repairs to Eight Aging Bridges on State Route 1 Will Improve Safety

MONTEREY COUNTY — Caltrans continues repair work to eight bridges on State Route 1 from Willow Creek to Garrapata Creek due to funds from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

“This route hugs the scenic coastline, serving the tourists and local residents along the Big Sur Coast who depend on this busy north-south road,” said Caltrans Director Laurie Berman.   “Safety improvements to Highway 1 now are key for motorists to be able to enjoy safer and   smoother travel for years to come.”

Four to five million people visit the Big Sur area each year, with most traveling down the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, also known as State Route 1.

“We are continuing to make great progress on delivering projects under Senate Bill 1 (SB 1),” said Caltrans District 5 Director Tim Gubbins. “The public will benefit greatly from this eight-bridge project that makes much-needed repairs to these deteriorating structures.”

This $4.4 million bridge repair project has been awarded to American Civil Constructors West Coast LLC of Benicia, California, and is unrelated to work to repair the roads that were affected by massive area rockslides. Crews will fill potholes and repave all eight bridges. Work began in early July and motorists will continue to encounter up to 20-minute, one-way traffic controls overnight Monday through Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Friday morning from midnight to 6 a.m. Daytime hours Monday through Thursday are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and Be Work Zone Alert.

SB 1 provides an ongoing funding increase of about $1.8 billion annually for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the state highway system. SB 1 funds will enable Caltrans to fix more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges and 55,000 culverts by 2027.

EMERGENCY RETAINING WALL WORK AT PAUL’S SLIDE REQUIRES THREE FULL OVERNIGHT CLOSURES IN BIG SUR STARTING SUNDAY NIGHT, AUG. 5

MONTEREY COUNTY – Augmenting the existing retaining wall will require both directions of State Route 1 at Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6) to fully close overnight for three nights, starting on Sunday, August 5th.

The highway will be closed from 10 pm to 6 am the next morning. Motorists/cyclists are advised to plan around these three emergency overnight hard closures. This roadwork should be completed by Wednesday morning, Aug. 8th at 6 am.

Paul’s Slide suffered major storm damage last January, 2017, losing part of its embankment including the southbound lane and closing for several months. Paul’s Slide remains active and continues to be monitored; it has currently been operating under a temporary traffic signal for the last 12 months and the signal will remain in place.

John Madonna Construction is the contractor for this project. Augmenting the existing retaining wall at Paul’s Slide will ensure a safer environment for all travelers.

“The project design philosophy: The plan to open the highway was guided in part by the 2004 Big Sur Coast Highway Management Plan. The document was prepared by Caltrans with guidance from a 19-member Sterling committeee including participation from local stakeholders Part of this plan was an overview of geology and landslides on the Big Sur Coast and it provided guidelines and techniques for how to manage and respond to these events. From this, a realignment alternative rose to the top because it was the efficient cost evfective, and ecologically mindful alternative available to reopen the highway. To do this however, protective features need to be building including:

*Rock Revetment: On the new shoreline, a rock revetment over 2000 feet long and 40 feet tall was built to prevent erosion and secured the main body of the slide. Without the revetment, the soil from the landslide would have been eroded away leaving nowhere to place the realigned highway. The revetment also reduced the amount of sediment entering critical black abalone habitat found up and down the Big Sur Coast.

*Engineered Embankments, Berms, and Catchments: Built in lifts to ensure proper compaction and reinforced with geosythetic fabric in steeper locations the 160 to 260-foot tall embankments, supported the realigned highway. Located above the berms, hilflicker retaining walls and strategic catchments were constructed to handle anticipated debris from the dynamic, continued and thoroughly monitored movement of the landslide. These work together to move and protect the highway away from the more active portions of the project site

*Culverts, Netting, and Other Protective Features: As the site matures, it is anticipated that debris will come down from the hillside. Culverts to handle runoff were installed, netting to reduce the energy of falling debris, and other protective features will allow for a defensible space for the highway and out maintenance forces.” (From program at the ceremony.)

 

 

 

 

Tree Removal on Hwy 1 near CHS On 7/]

CALTRANS TO PERFORM TREE REMOVAL ON BOTH DIRECTIONS OF STATE ROUTE 1 IN CARMEL NEXT THURSDAY ONLY, JULY 26

MONTEREY COUNTY –State Route 1 will be under one-way reversing traffic control for tree removal south of Atherton Drive near the Carmel High School on both directions of State Route 1, in Carmel next Thursday, July 26 from 9 am until 2 pm. 

There will be electronic message boards alerting the public of this lane closure.  Motorists

     may encounter delays of 15- 20 minutes as a crane will be used.

Traffic control will be performed by Caltrans Monterey Maintenance for the Salinas Tree

Crew to remove a dead Monterey pine and to ensure a safe environment for all travelers.
