Central Big Sur Interactive Slide Map

The following link by JWC will take you to a map with of the current, up-to-date slides and closures on OpenStreetMap, which may NOT work across all platforms and devices.

Current closures map

The PDF maps have been tested across different platforms, etc. and they work great as general area maps with links that open photos of the locations shown on the map (click on the names to open photos).

My wonderful, mysterious, map-making friend completed the second – Central portion – map of the Big Sur Coast. It goes north to Juan Higuera Creek. Here it is, but like the first one (South), it is available as the first page of my “pages” links to the right.

Highway 1 Update, 1/24/17

Found this on twitter from Cal Trans District 5. This is past the “slide” on the south end of Mud Creek. Oops, someone didn’t see the drain pipe before digging.

Road Update #2 and Big Creek Photos, 1/23/17

Paul’s Slide has gotten worse, so if you could reach it,  no escorts are being allowed. Here are a number of photos of the Big Creek Slide by Dave Nelson, Thomas Leahy, David Halterman, and Mark Readdie. This is not going to be opened up anytime soon.  This notice below is what Cal Trans sent out, but I heard from a local that a couple people from Esalen got through 35. Only way out for some people.

10:30 am – CORRECTION; NEW INFO—PAUL’S IS NOT PASSABLE/ESCORTABLE UNTIL NOON TODAY* (Ed. Note: Locals only and only going south, if history is any indication, and it might not be.)

10 am – Today’s update is exactly the same as yesterday. Still closed from Fuller’s to Raggeed Point. The escort for locals at Paul’s Slide is still there, but dated for Sunday. One would hope it will continue today until 3 as it did yesterday. But no way to know for sure.

If my coverage has been spotty, I have been sick since Thursday.

Mud Creek Plans update, 1/22/17

Cal Trans Update from Geotechnical department on Mud Creek:

Update: Early last week Caltrans and Yeh and Associates, a local geotechnical consultant, assessed the Mud Creek Slide and determined that the material that blocked the highway was a relatively shallow failure nested inside of a much larger landslide complex extending far above the highway. We recommended removing the displaced slide debris to allow us to determine if the larger landslide or a portion of it was moving. Removing the material at the base of the slope allows for the slide material above to clean itself out in the rain, which is likely what has occurred in the heavy rains on Friday and this morning. Keeping the highway closed while that material moves is necessary to ensure the safety of the traveling public and our workers.

With the upcoming break in the weather this coming week we plan to reassess the site conditions and develop a mitigation stragety moving forward. Until we have the opportunity to perform another field investigation it is difficult to say what that mitigation strategy will be and how long it will take to implement. We will consider all viable alternatives and do our best to open the highway when it is safe to do so.

CALTRANS
HiGHWAY `1 UPDATE
Sunday, January 22
11:00 AM

+++EMERGENCY VEHICLES ONLY NOW ALLOWED THRU ANDERSON CLOSURE–LOCALS WILL BE CITED BY CHP AND NOT ALLOWED TO TURN AROUND+++

State Route 1 CONTINUES closed from Ragged Point (SLO PM 72.87) to Anderson Canyon Bridge (MON PM 35.4) due to rock/mudslides in multiple locations. The newest slide is located at PM 35, requiring the closure to move from Lucia (PM 23) to Anderson Canyon Bridge (PM 35.4).

LOCALS AND GUESTS ONLY MAY TRAVEL SOUTH TODAY, SUNDAY FROM 7 AM UNTIL 3 PM , FROM ESALEN (PM 32.4) TO BE ESCORTED BY A PLOW TRUCK AROUND PAUL’S SLIDE (PM 21.6) IN ORDER TO TAKE COUNTY ROAD “NACIMIENTO FERGUSON” (PM 18.90) SOUTH, AS THERE IS AN ACTIVE SLIDE AND FULL CLOSURE AT MUD CREEK (PM 8.8) . NO NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC WILL BE ALLOWED.

Who can travel where is open to some considerable doubt due to wording, issued and reissued by the PIO, but the road is definitely closed to all in at least two locations, including locals.

ROADWAY IS ONLY PASSABLE TO LOCALS, ONLY WHERE MENTIONED ABOVE, IN BETWEEN THE CLOSURES AT THIS TIME.

Another update will be provided TOMORROW morning, Monday, Jan. 23 or sooner if conditions change.

The pictures are from this morning of Mud Creek (PM 8.8) and Anderson Cyn Slide (PM 35.4) respectively –where’s there’s barely space for Emergency Vehicles to be allowed thru by CHP.

Weather & Road Conditions, 1/22/17

8:30 am – I will post the road conditions from the Cal Trans daily update when received, but it is safe to assume Highway One is still closed in a number of directions.

CHP website indicates mud/rock/slides at River Inn, Lighthouse, and Hurricane Pointing – in addition to the ones we know of at Burns Creek, Paul’s Slide, and Mud Creek. Oh, joy. What fun today.

I just received an emergency flash flood warning for my area – which is probably for my Big Sur Zip Code. If you haven’t signed up, you should. I receive a text as well as a voice mail.
